Ibis SS Steel Frame (1989?) - Medium 17"

Interesting frame with 4 brake bosses. Two under the chainstays and two on the seatstays. I believe the two in the traditional location were added at a later date. A few scratches and rash on the driveside stay, but structurally sounds with no dents, cracks, etc.

I believe the Ibis SS is a 91 or a 92 model and not an 89 as the ebay title states. Ibis quit making the "U" brake model mounted on the underside of the chain stays after 89 and went to the more standard that were relocated to the seat stays. I do think that the more modern seat stay brake bosses on the seat stay were original from the factory as well as the u brake mounts on the chain stays. Ibis allowed for custom modifications from the factory upon request from the customer at a cost. The frame package was $800 in 1990, which included the hand made frame, toski forks, hand made Salsa stems and Salsa handlebars.

I have a 1990 Ibis SS bike and the seatstay brake bosses are exactly like the one's on the ebay frame for sale. As said before, I think that the U brake bosses were put on from the Ibis shop as a request from a customer(which was an option). I say that the frame is a 1991 or 1992 because in 1991, the U brake style was still seen as aftermarket brakes were still being sold in bike stores.

I also think that it may be a1992 model frame because Campagnolo came out with a mountain bike component group in the early nineties and they had the U brake style that was opted for as the brake setup at time of fabrication when shimano switched to the more modern seat stay brake setup. Campy ended up with creating the more modern style v brake bosses and kept the U brake stile as an option.

Ibis did make U brake bosses that were mounted on the seatstays in their 1989 trials version bikes since the trials bikes had 20" wheels which helped the trials bike sit low and relocating the U brake bosses on the seat stays meant that the trials rider didn't have to worry about bashing the brakes on rocks or logs.

Thank you for the detailed information. As you mentioned, Ibis quit making the U-brake style bosses after 1989, which is why we believe it is a 1989 model. This frame is being sold on consignment for the original owner, and we were told that the "standard" bosses were added because the buyer did NOT want U-brakes....so I assume the U-brake bosses were original. I sent the serial number over to Ibis, but no response
