Ibis Alibi

Retro Newbie
Hi,

I've got an Ibis Alibi and am thinking of selling it. Thing is, I'm not sure how much to ask. I've always put off selling it as I thought I would get very little for it, in fact the local bike shop told me exactly that, but if I could get something worthwhile, a relative concept, then I'd probably just sell it. I don't mountain bike anymore due to an injury.

The bike's in very good condition and has been ridden about a dozen times in total. Syncros stem and seat post, Judy SIDs and XL/XT groupset.

Apologies if this post is inappropriate. If it is, then please do not hesitate to delete it.

The best way to proceed, I suppose, is to just stick it on ebay and see what comes of it. I've only just started using ebay, which is why I haven't considered this previously.

Thank you in advance for any responses.

Best idea would be to stick it up in the for sale section with a photo and a price you'd like to get for it, then see if you get any replies. Then if not drop the price until you get some interest.

Bear in mind as buyers we generally buy bits rather than complete bikes so if you are prepared to split you may get a good price (perhaps better than the bike as a whole). Hope this helps.

Roughly how much would you suggest? I have virtually no idea. (Feel free to PM me a suggestion if you'd prefer.)

to be honest nor have I! Some of us are better at pricing certain types of bikes. This isn't one I know anything about, but others may, so hopefully they'll chip in.

I like this one, but i'm in a minority that prefers Alu bikes which tends to keep the price down a bit against the likes of steel
If you do decide on a price, please let me know

How old is it? What size is it? What does it look like? What did it cost new?

mtbr has 24 reviews of the 1999 Alibi with an average rating of 4.83/5, so can't be too bad!

It's about eight years old. Or so. It's a medium. Which fits me, at least, and I'm six foot. It's blue. It's in very good condition as it's only been ridden about a dozen times. There's a small scratch in the top tube, which was down to some utter inconsiderate **** turning the handlebars all the way around and scratching the frame with the brake lever in the process and then having the audacity to say, laughingly, "it's only a bike", when I called him a twat. (I think I need to let that one go.)

I recall, on the occasions I rode it, it being a very stiff frame, which is good in so far as every little bump and whatnot is transmitted to you, but bad in so far as every little bump and whatnot is transmitted to you. Thanks, BTW, to everyone who tool the time to respond, both here and via PM.

I think it would be risky putting it up on eBay, and more than likely that it would fetch a lot less than its true 'worth'. OK, I know nothing is worth more than somebody will pay you for it, but there isn't exactly an active market in Ibis Alibis and even on something as big as eBay you're in danger of there being only one buyer in the auction.

As has been said, this is a classic case where you would realise more money by splitting the bike into its constituent parts, each of which would do well on eBay as individual items as they've had so little use. I must confess I can't remember what the Alibi's spec was nor what it looked like, so very difficult to say, but such a classy, presumably lightweight, presumably beautiful aluminium frame with little use could fetch in the region of £200, 8-year-old SIDs £100, XT cranks £40, etc etc.

Go on, post a photo up!

It's presently sitting in the garage with a layer of dust on it, so I'd need to clean it before taking a pic of it. (It used to live under a tarpaulin in the garage.)

I'll endeavour to post a pic as soon as possible. (And I agree with you vis a vis splitting it up into its constituent parts.)
