I Like Klunking !

I was trying to avoid suggesting that... all we retro bikers know that 80's and 90's gear was the pinnacle of MTB technology and it's all been downhill [excuse the pun] ever since... cough, cough.

However - rough spec might be 80's frame, rigid, gears allowed on the back, single on the front? Bonus points for jeans, checked shirts, facial hair, BMX bars and motorbike brake levers?

U brakes, this is sounding allot like my 88 Wicked 8)

I suppose it's just a matter of time. Like anything that becomes collectable, competition follows. Like in the classic car world- folk start using cars for days out, like minded folk got together and started putting on competitions. 20 years on and Historic Motorsport is huge nowadays and always feature packed entry lists.
We are already well into the collecting phase, many are now at the 'getting together for rides' phase, so how long before we get vintage specific mtb races? There are already a few in the states and the OWMTB events had a competetive element.

Is it time for a Historic MTB race series?

Hell no! As soon as my bike's back in one piece and my legs are working again I'm heading off to find a local series and blast a few modern bikes in to the weeds. 8) (honest guv...)

In my case, I was thinking more of a sub £50 bike that pretty much anyone could pick up and chuck down the course in the spirit of the original repack.

In the more general case, however, you're probably right - assuming there was enough interest. I miss those days of being able to race every weekend throughout the summer without leaving the midlands. :)

There is an annual race on a local DH track that is for sub £20 bikes. Its very competetive and quite spectacular. No one cheats by bringing a good bike though as its a case of 'shitter the better'.
Seeing a good rider fully committed on a ladies shopping bike clear a rock garden is pretty funny. :P

I would like to point out that the reason I was willing to spend big money way back to have someone build a frame when was that my "klunker" was my main mode of transportation, and I rode it harder than what it was designed for. Those beautiful old pre-war frames lasted five or six months under me, then it was time to find another. The more I broke, the higher the replacement cost seemed to be and the harder it was to find another.

Thought I recognised that sliding style. :D

That's always the problem I guess - things that are cheap, plentiful and fun generally run out fairly quickly. :) In a similar vien there's a book called build your own sports car for £250 that used to be based on a MK 1 Escort because when the book was written they were cheap and plentiful. Didn't take very long before they became quite rare and collectable. Think the latest version is based on an 80's Ford Sierra. :)

Just out of interest, those original Joe Breeze frames are stunning (with the extra diagonal). Do you know if there any left in one piece and what happened to Joe Breeze - did he carry on building? (Sorry if these are all obvious questions but only discovered klunkers a few weeks ago via this site :) )
