It's why you can't afford a Rohloff

I'm surprised they didn't make more of an effort with the sale - but I know from experience most professionals don't really want to deal with used items. buying or selling.

I bought a shedload of used bromptons once from a govt. body, and although it was a total bargain, I believe my offer was twice any other!

I think a three wheel drive Rohloff tricycle, youcould adjust the gear to match the radius ofthe curve

or maybe an overmounted Rolly hub running to another rear hub, offering 14x14 gears, 196!

We've done a few rohloff mtbs over the years, the owner always falls out of love with them in a couple of years - I think the balance is off.

The weight saving of ti would be wasted on the mud-anchor hub too.

Fatbike or grandad tourer seems more natural, loony bars and canvas panniers

How many miles do you think they've done? Do they look well used as well as neglected and abandoned?

Given they steamed in at the top quality point
- and there's good reason for a quality hub gear for urban policing duties -
I hope the beat coppers had as much enthusiasm and engagement as the finance team!

I'd say they look to have done very few. The rims have no damage whatsoever, no scrapes, scratches or gouges. The pedals pins aren't worn down at all. The bearings in the front wheel and the pedals are buttery smooth as are the headsets and bottom brackets. The shifters tho' faded still have the little knurls for extra grip. The tyres all still have those little sticky out bits on the sidewalls and plenty of tread. If I were to guess I'd say no more than 1000 miles. I think they're virtually unused. A service with SJSC and they'll be as good as new.

Probably worked out cheaper than using the helicopter

I am now looking at what is left of the bikes thinking that with an Alfine hub you could have a very cheap expedition bike, something you could ride off into the sunset on and if it gets nicked or when you have had enough you could just go to a train station or airport, leave it there and come home.

Pretty much how it’s gone with me and Alfines and it’s why I’ve never made the leap to spending Rohloff money.
