I feel a fool

It was a serious question! Ductape was the nearest with axle. But I'm at least reassured that it wasn't as obvious as I thought, although maybe the reason why it hasn't happened to any of you lot is that you all inspect and re-grease your hubs regularly.

I found that the wheel wasn't turning at all easily, although it would still turn and it wasn't seized. I'm surprised I hadn't noticed it in pedalling, but I guess legs are strong. Taking the hub apart from the left, there was grease, not all that much and not very good, but certainly liquid rather than solid. But I noticed that the rh lock nut wasn't tight, and the rh cone was slightly pitted, with individual circles rather than a groove all around.

So I'm guessing that this suggests that the hub had been seizing just momentarily under stress, such as impacts, and then getting freed, and this made the bike jump up as it happened. I can't understand whether that could loosen off the rh lock nut. I had assumed it might just be solid grease, as it wasn't making a grinding noise, but I guess it must be the pitting that was causing the problem. So it needs a new axle assembly - still available from S for FH-M750. [Yes the actual cone itself is available (£2.24), but it won't come off as the threads on the rh end of the axle are kaput.]

I'm going to scavenge an axle from another wheel later on. Does anyone know whether the axle assembly from an FH-M737 is interchangeable?

I had a similar thing once when the bolt holding the freehub body on came loose. Very disconcerting to have the wheel wobbling around everywhere, but at least it gave me an incentive to get off my lazy butt and do a rebuild on the hub...

i cycled peddars way with the same problem....did 60mile before it died....totaly dried the hub out.....shattered the bearings about halfway through the trip .........what fun to listento the cracking of bearings 30 mles from home
