I was on the phone yesterday to Parcel force paying some customs charges on an ebay item from the US when my Visa debit card is declined, before I have time to hang up on the call the HSBC fraud prevention team call me on the other line.

They told me that my card was cancelled as they feared the details had gotten into the wrong hands.

OK....

They ran through the list of purchases that had been made, all of which were mine.

I asked why they had cancelled the card and other than repeating the original scripted line they refused to give me a reason.

All I can think of is that I took some cash out in camden last friday and the machine may have been compromised. Either that or the spending pattern has been a little odd lately as I have been travelling with work...but in which case...check with me before cancelling my card you gits!

Either way it has left me with 5-7 days until a new card arrives, it took some arguing until they agreed to send it to a London bank as apposed to my registered Leeds address. In the mean time I have literally the change in my pockets, a £25 M& S voucher and a half pack of polo's to survive 7 days in one of the world most expensive cities!

To top it all off a few weeks ago I posted some kooka cranks off to a fellow retrobiker, they didnt arrive, I made a payment via paypal on my visa debit about a week ago as a refund, now that has been stopped by my bank, whioch showed up at the recipients end as me having cancelled it!

I suspect there isnt even a prtoblem, if my card was skimmed...they wouldnt have my pin (I always cover it) and if they cancelled it because of the geographicaly unusual payment pattern of late...then thats just f***ing stupid.

Once the new card arrives I need to re-setup all my card linked automatic payments (spotify, paypal, ebay fees etc!)

Appologies to the RB member affected, the refund will get to you eventually!

you'd be even more annoyed if someone was using your card and they didnt stop it though.

are you going to have a go at busking?

HSBC put a block on my card yesterday as well.

Bit of a pain but at least they re-instated it straight away.

I had to remake a few payments though.

yes Natwest called me a couple of weeks ago as they noted unusual spending patterns (£96 in Chenai  ) - but they rang me first before we agreed to cancel

For this very reason I have 3 bank accounts and several CC's. I also have Visa and Mastercard as it's possible one system will fail countrywide so there is always backup... bit over kill maybe

Could you go into a branch and withrdraw cash, as long as you have photo ID you should be fine.

yeah I have been able to withdraw enough to tide me over, its more the bounced payments that were made prior to the card being cancelled that are now bouncing back left right and centre, including the refund for the RB'er that are still embarrassing me.
