How to remove surface rust on frame

I recently picked up a raleigh triathlon in very good original condition
There are spots of surface rust on the frame and fork which I would
Like to remove without damaging the paintwork
It's a lemon colour with all original transfers etc
Anyone have any tips as how to go about it ?
Thanks

Re:

I use tinfoil and water to polish chrome and substitute coke (the fizzy drink) for the water if theres extensive visible rust to be removed.

This also works on painted surfaces, but the paint needs to be in otherwise good condition or you may end up staining it (if its outer surface is really worn) with the aluminium oxide paste generated from the tinfoil.

If the paint is badly worn and faded, I have used a cloth with vinegar and lots of elbow grease with a good level of success.

Thanks for the tip will give it a go
Paint is good overall just the odd rust spot that's bugging me

Re:

Oxalic Acid seems to be the way to go. Doesn't hurt paint or decals. £8 from ebay and mix it with water. Need a tray big enough for a frame and forks. Have seen great results on BMX forums. 24hrs to 3days and you need to neutralize with bicarbonate of soda after soaking.

Will that not take the paint off ?

No, it has no effect on paintwork, but as with most rust removers it will also remove any zinc plating it has contact with.
