I've been tasked with constructing a website for our workplace.

Any recommendations on a host? How much should we pay? How to choose domain name?

Anybody here do freelance web design with a Retro-discount

I use LCN for domains

Wife does our websites using Bluevoda software, but that relies on you uploading to their hosted space - Vodahost

That costs me $9.95/month

I also have webspace hosted by Bluehost which is $29.95 a quarter.

A lot of domain name companies do hosting too.. I think LCN do..

And ISP's (like aol, blueyonder, btinternet etc.) come with a wodge of webspace too...

Have you considered MrSite? for an off-the shelf solution?

Cheap and cheerful, depending on how big/small you want it to be.

Maybe worth a look if you're going to start small...?

We use LCN for work and they're pretty damn good, you'll also be offered some software (Serif Webplus) to build websites with. It's pretty easy to use and free too, which helps! I can personally vouch for their customer service skills which are also very good. I built our website, (fairly basic but it'll give you an idea) using their software, have a look here (free plug, nice!)

Alot of newer web design software uses copy/paste and drag&drop. . spending hours trying to get a page sorted with Dreamweaver (while still an impressive piece of software, if not somewhat complicated) is totally unnecessary these days.. thankfully ;)

Wife hasn't updated ours in a long time but she has no training or experience in IT whatsoever...

I should also say that the serif software is pretty easy to use if you go through a few of the tutorials, it's pretty intuitive
