How old is this Scapin?

That's cos campag 8 speed, campag 7 spd and shimano 7 spd are all 5mm nominal spacing. So, if ever you struggle to find another campag 8 speed wheel, you can pop a shimano 7 spd wheel in and it'll work (less one gear of course). The hard bit will be finding another campag 8 rear mech if that goes, but there are options, but that's another topic

Thanks for you input,

Here are a couple of extra photos, I have done a close up of the Columbus tubing decal - although badly degraded you can make out the S and X (yep I know what you're thinking! ) - the frame could potentially be SPX, as the frame is 60cm - only way to find out is strip it and weigh it!

I have been doing research on these Columbus decals trying to find out if they're datable - this type with the larger letters with horizontal lines running through it was available in the 80's but not sure when they were discontinued.

The more I look at the frame etc, I'm most inclined to think the bike is early 90's - its a pity there are no serial numbers.

Also, I should mention the marks on the seat stem - would you believe that the aero stem was down to the bottom with a couple of wood screws in the gap!!

Hi Otherself,

I have had a look your Scapin - came out very nicely! Certainly can't knock Mercian for their finishing.

I would have said my frame although virtually the same - was slightly younger - there is no dishing on the top rear seat stays where Scapin is engraved, also, rear brake bridge is a V on mine, coupled with the paint job - either way they're both tasty bits of kit!

Was your frame fully chromed prior to paint?
