I know this all too well! I have just bought some '98 Z3 forks with a similar problem. However, I am going to put a 10wt oil (7.5wt from factory) and up the oil level by 5mm as per the manufacturers instructions and see how it goes. Should stiffen them up enough not to need the uprated springs - I hope!
