How do I get this cassette off?

Okie doke. . . can see what needs to happen I think..

Question..
The exisiting axle (now on the floor with a few greasy balls) is a tad over 140mm..

If I wanted to put 8-speed on it (it's 7 at the mo' ) do I need a longer axle?

Some on the bay are 170+

And are all the balls a standard size 1/4" ??

I thought that screw on cassettes only came in seven speed  and the allen key thing is for a freehub not a freewheel :?

You can get screw on 8 speed freewheels but they aren't that common. Here's one I found on the bay, although there may be cheaper ones.

Not excessively pricey. . . . although, ironically, a pound more than I paid for the bike

What about axle length??

The one that's just come off is 140 and a bit, and there's 145's on ebay./.. but there are also 176's.. which is quite a bit longer..
Is the extra length necessary for going to 8-speed?

I never changed axles when I went eight speed it just went on......I had to adjust the axle through a tad from the non drive side but it fit as mtb use 135 axles generally...someone will now correct me

srely it would be 140 for the extra bits that sit in the frame and for the bolts to go on?
i.e. because the frame spacing from drop out to drop out will be 135mm?

maybe go 145?
