Hosepipe bans..

Why, when we are an island nation, surrounded by water, do we have our water companies imposing hosepipe bans in March?

Is desalination really that hard/expensive? I believe that the Yanks and our friends down under have managed it. Why can't/won't we do it?

Because the lazy dumb *&Y^Y£"s at Southern Water (any company that gets fined £20.3million by their industry regulator has to have s**t for brains running the show) would only piss the expensively de-salinated water down the cracked, broken and generaly leaky water mains that they're just too down right lazy to maintain.

Other than that, desalination is a reasonable solution. As is collecting rain water rather than having all the drains just flushing it all in to rivers and the sea.

To set up a desalination set up for the whole nation just to supplement would run into the multi billions mate and is costly to run plus it creates a huge environmental risk as most of the time the salt and heavy metals and toxin's would be back into the sea plus we dont have the cleanest/clearest water to start with.

desal water is not nice either we get on most ships and trust me after 2 days you sick of it the taste is really not nice

If we all do are bit and we get some bloody rain soon we'll be ok  :D

you can still use a hose pipe on a ban (unless bylaws state zero use) your just not allowed to leave it running ie watering the lawn it makes me laugh "theres a ban but you can still use it as long as its in your hand" essex and suffolk water about as much use as a choco fire guard

I find it hard enough to swallow the water charges made here, when the water is gravity fed from a loch, being most of what is charged in central London, where the water is pumped through a maze of expensive pipework and treated at huge expense a number of times.

They are banging on about taking Scotland and Wales water.

The irony, if that resulted in us having a hosepipe ban!

I can honestly say it has barely stopped raining here since October :D

Had hosepipe bans then water bowsers on street corners when I stayed in Kent - that was a laugh at the height of summer. 3 kids and no bathing/flushing facilities

Desalination is hugely expensive. Water soaks up a lot of heat (which is why it's a brilliant coolant).
To desalinate 1 litre of water costs about 15p in energy. Bearing in mind most people use about 150 litres per day puts it at £22.
Add in pumping costs etc...still keen?

Even if you go to USA energy prices you'll be paying over £5 per person per day.

What really grates on me is that they can see it comming and it's only going to get worse and the solutions are only going to get more expensive the longer they leave it.
But we all need water and therefore it doesn't matter because whatever ot costs we'll have to pay for it regardless.

To put a nesessity for life in the hands of private enterprise was always going to be a bad idea.
