can horizontal dropouts be used with gears? the mrs is looking at smaller jump style type frames and most have horizontal dropouts. also, she will be using frame with standard qr wheels (9mm?)
advice aprreciated

the frames i have been looking at dont have a hanger, would this be frame specific or would i be able to get them anywhere?
would i still also need tensioner things?
do the dropouts take standard qr without hassle?

my drop outs take a standard q.r axke.

if you have horizontal drop outs you slide the wheel to tension the chain. if you have a mech, that will tension the chain anyway.

if you want to run a mech you will need a frame with a hanger or bodge something on there.

begs the question though, why do you want horizontal drops if you are using a mech?

Sorry to be a pedant guys, but what you refer to as horizontal dropouts are in fact track ends, Horizontal dropouts are what you get on cheaper older frames where clamp on rear deraliers are used. The wheel axle is slotted intoward the front of the frame and pulled backwards. Track ends have the entry to the slots at the rear of the frame as found on BMX, track bikes purpose built single speeds like On-One Inbreds etc.

If the frame in question has track ends I may have to take back the advice I gave earlier. Naughty man, not reading the OP properly.

I'm sure you could bodge one to fit though. Or have a Shimano Saint integrated hub/mech. Or hub gears. 8)

DMR used to do a chain tensoner that doubled as a mech hangar.

Though I would say that most jumps bikes will be a bit of an odd geometry for normal riding. Most have a long top tube compared to the seat tube C-T measurements, and as women generally!! have a shorter torso compared to leg length this may make them even more unsuitable.
Still at least if she gets bored of it you have yourself a jump bike to dick about on  .

well she is on a barracuda ghetto jump type frame and the moment and i would probably say that the top tube is a bit long for her, so i was looking on pinkbike at the jump bikes bit (cus theyre small, didnt know the toptube is a funky proportion). she wouldnt want to spend too much. im unsure what to do now
