hope mini brake hose split and re route- How to do it ?

doogie

Retro Guru
I want to re route the rear brake hose on my pace rc300 through the correct routing holes on the top tube.
I have got to remove the hose from the rear caliper, then I presume I have got to remove the brass olive off the hose and then somehow feed the hose through the frame and back out again. Do I need to use a new olive or can I reuse the old one? :?

Any help from fellow Pace owners or anyone ? :?

Thanks in advance

If the old olive is not scored or badly deformed it may be used again.

I've found that the best way to do this is to operate the brake lever prior to disconnecting and pump the pistons a little way out. Take care that you don't pop the buggers out though. Then disconnect the hose at the brake lever master cylinder. At the caliper end start threading the hose through the guides in the frame. Reconnect the hose at the master cylinder and then push the pistons back into the caliper thus bleeding that tiny bit of air back into the master cylinder.

Job done.

Personally, I wouldn't bother trying to re-use the olive unless Hope ones deform less than others do ?

Otherwise I do the same as above - one thing to watch is that you treat the hose very carefully once you've removed it from the master cylinder and don't knock it or wave it about during cutting it and threading through the guides, otherwise you'll lose some fluid and introduce air into the system.
Not the end of the world obviously - just means a re-bleed.

The olive really shouldn't be deformed or scored at all unless it's been assembled incorrectly (almost impossible) or has been 'grollied' taking the thing off the hose. Any mild deformation would be OK as it would probably retake it's original shape on refitting anyhow.

Any doubt, fit a new one.

As a point of interest hydraulic bays re-use olives in high pressure pipework unless they are damaged.

I agree that if all you have to do is disconnect a hydraulic line and then reconnect it again in the same location then there is no need to replace the olive.
In this case though I doubt that you'd get the sleeve nut through the hose guides, so you'd have to cut the end of the hose with the olive off to remove the sleeve nut.

The olive will be permanently deformed (as it forms part of a compression fitting) and won't be removable from the flexible hose, let alone be re-usable. If it hasn't compressed and gripped the hose then it won't stop the hose just pushing out under braking pressure.

The sleeve has a slot in it, you can, with minimal pressure open it enough to slide it off without any deformation.

Shows how much I know about Hope brakes - I'll just shut up then
Presumably they use split olives ?

I've reused the split olives in my Hope Mono Mini's a few times, no problem, as has been said before though if they are damaged best get new ones, although it's pretty easy to remove them & refit them.
