Beware that the XTR BB's are only for XTR cranks.

Are you sure - I've got an XTR B/B with XT chainset - all seems fine.

like terryhfs said the shimano mtb bb's are all interchangable so xtr can be used with deore, slx, xt and xtr the only odd one is saint that has a 83mm wide bb option for those monster dh frames
dont make me get the shimano spec folder out rampage

Maybe not then! It was someone at Evans who told me that when I was about to buy an XTR, they normally very good too!

Shimano stuff all works together fine - I have an XTR c'set running on an LX HTII bottom bracket, which has replacement bearings that cost £5 for the pair.

That's the cheapest way to go if you don't mind a bit of fiddling - a set of new bearings every year or so.

I made my own HT 2 bearing removal tool today.

I used a piece of 2.5mm thick metal.
Cut out into 2 half moon shapes. The curvature matches the circumference of the hole in the centre of the BB.

Then I used an old bolt and cut sections out of it with a hacksaw just leaving enough of the head to slide in between the 2 half moon shapes when they are fitted into the BB.
This holds the half moon pieces in place to stop them falling out.

Prise out plastic ring and seal from BB.
Clamp BB in vice.
Insert 2 half moon shapes into BB and push into gap behind bearings.

Push modified bolt into gap between half moon pieces, like so:

Carefully hit top of bolt with hammer.

Bearing should easily come out.

Actually the only difference between XT and XTR external BBs is the colour.
