HiFi, Speaker cable.

I know sweet FA in this company. But I had a very strange effect on my home system...

Yamaha BlahBlah CD player
Rotel RA931Mk3 Amp
B&W DM 601S2 speakers

Chord Silver Screen cable.

Using the cable cut to lengths to reach my speakers there was NO bass from the right hand speaker. It turned out after lots of hunting that the cable on the right side was exactly 1/2 the length of that on the other. Local HiFi shop (LHS??) said this caused an 'effect' and by trimming the longer one, so the difference was not exactly 1/2 then the 'effect' disappeared.

2 Lessons, 1) when something is reccomended by a HiFi buff listen, they are probably right. 2) Reminding my of why I hate electrics, you can't see what is happening or why. Leave it to thems what knows!!

the yamaha blah blah is a brilliant piece of kit
but as for the loss of bass... i really cant think why this effect would happen :?
The only thing i can think of is that originally when the problem happened you might have had the speakers wired out of phase... in other words the wires crossed the wrong way on one terminal... causing frequency cancellation.

Yes, your LHS was talking BS. Unless your speaker cables were very long... by my calculations your speaker cables would have to differ by about 5 miles to cause phase problems at 20khz :D

I had some 601 but cant remember them...

If the back of the speakers look like this, the binding posts probably werent tightened up enough

if your normal listening system is 5kw... i very much doubt you can still hear 20khz !!
Im sure you are speeding up the effect of presbycusis with that system
out of interest how did you do that calculation ? and why did you do it at 20khz(high frequency) and not 20hz (low frequency) ?

Hey, this is all good stuff!

Having a bit of Tag gear, LGF is my new friend!
Also have some old Quad 303s (3) and a 33
Also and old Meridian 100 series pre/power amp and supplies (These sound lush, loads of power too)

Having built many a speaker too, this all sounds interesting, but my biggest slightly different question now is...
Do I splash the cash on some small Funktion Ones I can get a discount on, or plump for some cheap JBLs and be done with it!?

In response to above things..
- Speaker wire: Mains cable is great! Std 2-core works a treat. £4k worth of amps and I spend few quid on speaker wire.
- No bass prob - as said above, would guess terminal connection or out of phase, lead lengths like this make f all difference for this!
- Hi Fi is like a religion. People follow it, and have faith in those that know. Misguided faith.
- The devils in the detail, theres a lot in electronics and HiFi, but its not ju ju magic. If a cable says one way, or costs £24000, put your common sense hat on!

:D

as for the funkion one vs jbl... it depends ? i have only listened to large funkion one PA systems... and i must say i prefured the old blue turbo sound rigs... I havnt listened to a small f-one setup... But i have recently listened to a set of genelec 8030A monitors ... these are really really really nice for the price !!... whats your rough budget ?...

EDIT.... how big is your living room ?....
I dont mean to turn this in to a P.A thread but this is going cheap...

Nooo! Just a general comment, some people seem to think its mystical!

Yeah, heard the big funktion one and turbosound, but the f1 stuff seems to get a lot of love at the moment, just not so sure on the smaller stuff.

Budget? Undecided. Want something for small parties/events etc, but don't want to compromise on quality just for something 'loud' like a cheesy shouty disco man.
Some nice Mid/Tops, and may build or buy a sub to suit too. Nothing huge at the mo, rather the quality than quantity.
Tempted by some of the cheaper JBLs for a play first, some good prices about. May take a trip to HTFR and have a butchers.

Think this has been on before? Looks good, sure it will go high though.

Ideal for bit of fun, and maybe some hire too, though not much money in that as too many just do for fun (like I would)
