Old school Luxman before they were bought out by Alpine was and still is the shizzle. I have the Champagne series M and C 02 amp/preamp with Twin class A amps. They pump out insane amounts of heat and are close to 200 pounds for the pair, but they produce incredible sound.

Those old Luxmans were lovely.
Class A amps rule I reckon for smooth, fluid sound (esp. tube amps with a good stiff power supply.) I've got the 'eco-tw*ts' guilty conscience to prove it....

Have never heard a jap/eastern system perform as well (to my ears) as good british 80s/90s kit. Although was very nearly seduced by a huge pair of Tamon speakers in Comet, Glasgow, around 1980 :shock: Mahoosive they were :shock:
Told them to keep the set for me whilst I was away working during easter hols - F/kers had sold them when i came back :evil: so had to buy wharfedales :cry: (which were not at all good )

New kit is massively overpriced as always - thank the dear lord for loot/ebay/gumtree and the Evening Times "snips"

One point - I recently got (s/h obviously) a proper hifi shelving unit and removed my system from the catalogue ikea shelving - sound improvement has been significant, very significant especiially on vinyl

Can't speak for the other components, but I do know that very few speakers that I have heard come close to Bowers and Wilkens....lucky to have interited a pair of their floor speakers from Dad.

My brother in law had B&Ws moons ago which were brill - although he did pair them with sadly average Trio and Pioneer stuff :shock: :shock:

JAP amp

British speakers

etc etc.

Japanese amplifiers ( the good ones) walk all over fragile British designs and are way cheaper to repair than UK stuff, just ask anyone whose had to have a bit of Audiolab repaired lately.

My former squeeze which I thoroughly regret selling, but it paid for a new kitchen...

JVC PL-10/ ML-10 - 1600 GBP in 1980
