I have a 1993 Caloi frame that im putting front suspension forks on, my question is whats the maximum travel i can have without upsetting the handling of the bike, im told all the Caloi frames were the same wether you bought a low spec without sus forks or high spec with sus forks.

I have my eye on some 80mm Manitou forks :D

In 1993 most forks would've had much less than 80mm travel - probably more like 40-50mm. I remember having some 'long-travel' rockshox in 1994 that were all of 60mm travel!

Also can someone tell me what which part do i measure to get my headset size, do you measure the inside of the headset cup ???

Will it upset the handling then if i put 80mm on it ?? The Caloi's that had sus forks ran rock shox quadras

Try it. All quite subjective really. For example I have a frame designed for a 63mm fork - ran it with a 80mm and hated the handling, back to 63mm and all was sweet. Others on this forum seem to regularly put 100mm forks on frames deisnged for a lot less then rave about the ride.

Look for JUDY or similar in 60mm and you'll probably be fine.

You could try 80mm if you wanted as it'll be the only way you'll find out if you like it.

Thanks for your comments chaps, one last question my frame diameter where the headset sits is 1 2/8, and the bit the stem slides into on the cup is 1 1/8 does that mean my headset is 1 1/8 ??

Sorry for the stupid question

I notice a lot of people running the wrong sag, that is a factor with geometry.

Suck em and see is my general rule in life, bar some rules you really can't break most things work after a fashion.

:)
