Help with 1" crown race

I'm currently doing up my Ernie Clements mid 80s tourer and was in the process of fitting an 1" campag record crown race, using my usual and successful method. However it didn't go on and cracked part of the crown race.
Have taken it to my LBS and they reckon the crown race is fine as the damaged bit is just the seal flange and not the important race. So I asked them to fit it. After much filling and cursing they cannot get it on either. They have just tried a 1 1/8 but that flops about all over the place.
Any ideas as to whats wrong, is there a bizarre size that we are not aware of? or is it a trip to a local engineers shop to put it on a lathe?
HELP please!

I think there are a couple of 1" standard sizes, JIS or ISO, or something a bit like that??..

Try the King website, they probably have the correct terms for the slightly different sizes.

Edit: If you google "Sheldon Brown headset dimensions cribsheet" it shows more than a few 1" headset sizes.

Not too keen on the "after lots of filing" quote in the original post.........you mean they filed away at the forks ??

I second the "after lots of filing" quote! You can't file this, the crown needs cutting with a crown race cutter - and then the race is drifted into a good tight fitting position. If the LBS are filing the crown where the race sits than abandon that shop for ever as they clearly have no idea (and no tools!!)

26.4mm ISO - most standard 1 inch headsets
27.0mm JIS - Japan, taiwan etc, also NJS headsets/forks

Good table of various dimensions of headsets on http://sheldonbrown.com/headsets.html

Maybe you need the slightly larger 27.0mm race? That's why it's not fitted easily and cracked. I've actually had a couple of British built frames, albeit 1950s ones, that have had 27.0mm fork crown race. Not uncommon at the time I believe. Surprised me at the time as I would've expected the standard 1 inch headset with 26.4mm crown race. I third the thought that filing sounds an awful plan, definitely run from that shop if they are filing the fork crown! I had the fork crown taken down to fit a 26.4mm race on one by my LBS. Lovely tool they used too! I'd check the fork crown size and the headset crown race with some digital calipers and go from there.

Camag will 26.4mm for a 26.5mmm crown race seat probably. There are a number of 27.0mm headset about like the M-part elite. The question is what is the stack height of the headset.

Low stack height plus 27.0mm JIS crown race? Tange-Seiki sounds a likely candidate for making something that fits the bill.

Its OK, the LBS haven't messed it up, the filling was to get the paint off from the respray, once it was clear there was no way the race would slip on it was handed back and I was advised to take it to an engineers to get it on a lathe. They dont have a tool to do it at the shop.
So off to another LBS thats been around for donkeys years, they may have the setting/cutting tool, or if not it is off to the engineers. Some one mentioned 26.5mm for the fork crown diameter. Is this what I should go for?
Thanks for your help so far
