Hey all,

I'm after some advice on removing a Suntour cassette, 1990 vintage, 7 speed - part of the accushift range I think.

It's fallen off with the freehub when dismantling the rear hub spindle/bearings. There is a threaded tube left inside the hub which I assume this was once screwed onto!

How do I free the cassette from the freehub - does the first cog thread on? The back of the hub looks splined as if the cassette should slide on.....

Here's my project thread with more pics/details.....

Any help gratefully received.

Ta!

Looks like the last sprocket lock-ring type, so 2 chainwhips, 1 on the smallest sprocket, 1 on another sprocket pulling different ways should free it up. Also, do not underestimate the importance of swearing loudly whilst tackling jobs like this.

Cheers dude - looks like I'm borrowing a second chain whip then.

Duly noted on the swearing....I find things happen that little bit easier with a little bit of 'effin and 'jeffin.

Also expecting bloodied knuckles......

An old length of chain wrapped around the sprocket and clamped in a vice will work in lieu of a second chainwhip too.

Although i have a diy chain whip, i wrap a short length if chain round the 11 t sprocket and hold it with adjustable plier whrn removing a cassette.

All I'll say is good luck.

Yes the freehub connects in a similar way to shimano, just from inside the hub not the outside of mthe freehub.

I'm 1-1 with Suntour cassettes at the moment, the one I am currently using on the Raleigh came off quite easily, where as the original 7's MD cassette that came on my XC Comp wheels had to be cut with a grinder to remove it (several teeth were missing due to a previous failed removal attempt). I didn't use the freehub body in the end as I needed a non-MD one but wanted the spare as an option.

Carl.
