Help required identifying just what ive bought?!

:) I was quite pleased with myself, from what justifiably looked like a Holdsworth but with the odd and annoying head furniture /lugwork that I felt wasnt Holdsworth, Ive managed to drag it up country as far as the search goes, from London, to Derby and the house of Mercian!
Still need to identify the model but whatever, im sure it's a Mercian.
Im still in the process of stripping back the frame, the seat post is stuck tight, as are the BB cups.. I'd send it up to Derby but i think i'd have more fun doing it myself..

Spokesman might chip in but it looks a bit Carlton ish with the wrap around seat stays......

Shaun

Just caught this thread, for my two kenneth it at first glance looks to have some Carlton features and 'look' but taking a closer glance at it the fork crown looks very different to me. Seeing so many cartons I begin to have blindness to all other marques!

Well the son and I have trashed the kitchen, much to the annoyance of the missus.. shed was full and way too cold to faff about in the garden. Bike has been rubbed back to bare and primered up with zinc primer. Have decided for now to leave it as that until better weather and amenities allow a proper paint up.
Always have had it down as a tool to ride out round cambs with the boss but also something for a bit of quality time with the son.

We're pleased with the current state although purists should look away now..

We've kept the old BB for now, fitted shorter crank arms off something that was laying about the garden.. emmelle kids bike... the Mercian is a tall beast and im stumpier than a smurf.. they fit my needs in reaching the pedals although admittedly theyre from a BSO.. We can always fit proper ones later..
The gears at the moment have been left off, leaving it in single speed mode on front and back cogs for now.
New bar tape, nos weinmann levers with safety bars, the old brake cables back on and the old weinmann calipers.. they work.. theyll do for now.
Wheels are ok but need rebuilding before any real use.

I'm tempted to shove it on the bay and see if I can get something a bit shorter in frame size, although it's rideable so i might just keep with stumpy crank arms..

Apologies for the crap pic.. my decent all singing all dancing phone has decided it cant be bothered being decent and is shortly going to make a damn good doorstop if it doesnt buck its ideas up...

thats nice what do you intend to use for the lacquer stage of your spray job just out of interest?

Colour-wise? Undecided yet. Basically leaving it Zinc Primered thru winter so its got a few layers of protection and will decide the rest later.. Im thinking of a light yellow frame with black lugs and seat tube. Might get it done in 2 pack by a local garage. :?

i meant in term of clear coat after the paint, every time i've tried a spray paint job i've found its not very durable...i was hoping you might have some sneaky tip for a product that worked.

Ive found more than anything good preparation is the key to success. Thats flatting down as the painting progresses, etc - doing a proper job and not rushing.. Thats why Im not painting now. its not the right time of year as far as temperatures go and humidity..
When it comes to the clear coats, it's essential to apply lots of layers. Ive found 6 a minimum and again it needs to be applied properly. It will never be as hardcore wear resistant as a proper 2 pack or Powdercoat paint job, but it wont be far off it if time is taken.
As for brand.. I usually avoid the Hellfords selection of paints in tins and get them to mix a colour at the counter. It sprays on so much better.. feels like youre spraying colour on not spraying an aerosol. A higher quality spray can as far as Im concerned.
Ive always used their recommended clear coat laquer and had no problems
