[HELP] Rebuild a SPECIALIZED Ground Control FSR 97

FELINO

Retro Newbie
Hello,

I would like to rebuild a specialized ground control fsr 1997.
By now i do not have a camera, but as soon I get one I will post.

BUT by now, here is a similar bike. My crancks are RED from FSA.

I'm looking for

Manual / Catalog / specifications of the front fork answer manitou pro RED.
Manual / Catalog / specifications Rockshox deluxe rear

Look that both shocks are not in good conditions... and I will try to rebuild.

If you have any information about this bike, please share.

Thanks

You may well be able to drop in a replacement, modern rear shock (and improve the ride by a factor of a million in the process). See if you can measure the eye-eye length and stroke of the rear shock.

A friend had the same bike around 99-2000, he really enjoyed it. It looks like a pretty modern bike.

EDIT: a company that makes upgrade shocks for the frame: http://www.risseracing.com/applications/Workbook1.htm.

thanks
I saw risse... but by now i did not removed the rear shock to check if it is a 160mm or 165mm...
I tested today the bike.
The fork is "dead"... so the option is rebuild it or change it by a more modern one...

Manitou Pros weren't *awesome* forks in 1997. An upgrade would be nice for you.

It's too bad, I had an OK-shape '99 Manitou SX that would match the red/blue scheme, but it's been used for a friend's bike. (It's now sitting on a '99 Rocky Mountain Thin Air :D. Shipping across the world would be more than it's worth too.)

From the year of the bike, Marzocchi Z2's were really nice forks and still ride well. A Rock Shox Tora is a nice fork for $300 US.

As far as the shock... see if somewhere, there's a listing for the rear shock stroke and eye-to-eye length.

If your bike has a 165mm stroke length (6.5"), Cambriabike.com has some old Fox shocks in the 6.5" x 1.5" size listed. I think there were new 2001 Floats for $150 US, and a new Manitou S-Type SPV for $200 US. Check EBay too, and make sure the size is right! (And if you go Manitou, make sure you can get bushings!)

Hello,
sorry fior answering late.

Yes my "market survey" is coming to the same conclusion.. manitou forks weren't awesome... I'm thinking to upgrade...

fir the rear... it is another topic, I do not find references of my rockshox rear shock...

now i'm quite lost... i need to use again the mtb... but I'm just wondering if i spend money on it or buy a recent one...

It depends on how much you have, or want to spend on the bike.

For the fork: I'd look for a used Bomber Z2 or Rock Shox Judy from 1999-2000. I had a later Manitou SX ('99) that worked well too. A new fork like a Rock Shox Tora would be $300 US.

Rear shocks are harder to service, and a replacement's probably $150 US or more. Rock shox hasn't made the Coupe/Super Deluxe shocks since about 2002.

It's a shame that it's so expensive to rebuild the bike. The Specialized FSR bikes were excellent bikes for their day, and would ride ok next to a modern dual suspension bike.

I fully agree with you... the fsr is still a good bike

for the rear reockshox deluxe, i try to find a pdf or any information how to rebuild it... but no success

for the fork, i'm wondering if a dart 2 will be not "enough"

I lost my job, so I want to lower the cost.

But it is not important to have a mtb, it's just to make sun coming to me.

Kind regard
s
