after the first year they were all made for WI by Sugino. They are still nice cranks! I think what you are bidding on looks like the one Marin fitted.

So the the original owner was not lying and the sugino crank that is fitted was from new after all ?
So as if it was originally fitted with that crank would i be better off leaving it with the sugino crank and forgetting about fitting the white one then ?

My mate's old 1995 Team Ti had the same crank as in the ad so that's period correct.

I believe the White Industries gear fitted to mid 90's Marin were made by Sugino.

I would say so. Normally they say "Made in Japan for White Industries" - some also say Sugino.

Sugino make really good cranks - the Mighty 900 was lighter than XTR of the same period. A Kona wouldn't look right with anything else, IME.

It's just that Sugino never shelled out loads of marketing dosh, so nobody values their name. FWIW I've always found that Sugino cranks ran true whereas Shimano ones tended to run wonky, except XTR.

They made some decent cranks for many other top end companies as well. As mentioned, just not as hyped up under their own brand, at least in the 90's.

They probably had better facilities to forge, x-ray and test the cranks than WI had ;)

you have helped me make up my mind ,i will keep the that crank ,now i know it came with the bike ,thanks :)

As far as I know the Sugino crank on your bike was not original. The White Industries crank was made by Sugino but it's not the same crank.

....and here is the Marin catalogue for '95.

There you can see that the Team Marin is equipped with a White Industries crank that looks very much like the one I sent you a link to earlier and you will also find that the LX sti's are not original. The M738 sti's are the ones that was on the bike originally.........and they are far better than the LX ones.
