HELP please: easiest way to lower gearing (and cheapest!)

Plus with even with my mechanical skills I can change a granny. :)

It would take mighty skills to mount a 22t granny to what I assume is a 74BCD chainset ;)

At the risk of being the first to say so, anything you can't ride up in 24-28 isn't worth riding up at all...!

;)

Indeed. Those are God's own gear ratios. Don't forget, unless you are one of those types who religiously change their chain every other month, chances are you might have to replace that along with the cassette.

If you're like me and let everything where out together over a long time, you may well have to change the most used rings as well.

Thanks for the advice and links, everybody.

I think I'll try a new granny first-off and see how that goes. I tend to change cogs a lot, and rings far less often, so that will probably fit better with me. I'll maybe think about that SRAM cassette as well at some point.

I'll report back on how it went for anyone else trying this

Cheers,
Kev

As Mike pointed out to me a new granny is not an option unless you are running Compact/microdrive cranks. Judging by the age of the rest of your set up you aren't although you should confirm to us.

So what are your cranks?

Doh. Flurry of messages. Didn't spot the quoted one and never even thought about the diameter on the 22T grannies  The cranks are FC-M730s.

Oh well. Thanks again. I'll check out the 12-30 cassette instead. It's about time I redid my hubs anyway, so I'll combine the two jobs.

The cheapest way is 'get off and walk'...

some hills are just too steep :)

Behave yourself laddie! There's a 20/34t in the works here...

Compact cranks with a twenty tooth granny would be my move, job done for say £30 max (more likely twenty), no capacity/compatability issues* and keep your nice m730s for when you feel up to it 8)

*so long as you make sure that the cranks you buy suit the same length BB spindle, or they're some on CRC for under a fiver!
