Help me identify these Campagnolo parts please!

Re:

I can only see the shifters but would presume this is a Peugeot Athena. Look at mine in my sig, although I only bought this as a frame and built it myself with Campag parts (not Athena). Tube diameter is 28.6 I believe and i bought a clamp from Ebay to hold my derailleur.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

she's a clamp fitting, not braze-on.

All along i thought it was an Athena 653 but its looking more and more like a 1989 'Racing-Team 653 MAB Z', which would originally have had a Mavic SSC groupset.

The bike came with a shimano 600 front mech (only original bits seem to be bars and stem) but theres no measurement markings on the clamp.

Obvious question but i presume in that case that the frame does not say "653 Athena" on the top tube then? or could it have been scratched off, painted over etc? Any pics of the actual bike?

Hi Jules,

No, it hasn't a 653 Athena decal anywhere; nor does it have any obvious eveidence of a decal having been removed or the frame being repainted, so its been a bit of a pain to try and figure out what she is.

I have a pic of her (albeit with no wheels on) somewhere, will try and upload it.

the only other possibility I was thinking....was this frame available to buy as frame and forks only?

Could the original buyer here in Ireland have bought a bare frameset and built her up himself maybe?

Kettlo has this morning confirmed for me that the rear mech and shifter levers are campag athena (cheers dude!)

Other parts on her when purchased second hand circa 1994 are as follows..

shimano 600 front mech
3ttt bars and stem
mavic 631 'starfish' 52/42 chainset
campag headset...not sure which group
campag bb...not sure which group
suntour (fluted - non aero) seatpost
san marco rolls saddle
shimano 105 aero brake levers

the rims I've sourced via these forums are campag nuovo tipo (circa 1982/83) on later ma40 rims.

the plan is to have her fully resprayed, with all new decals, with a campag group fitted...the mavic chainset does look like it could look well if I machine polish it though.....might retain that!

Re:

What I would do if I was you......

Sell the starfish and buy my Athena chain set, front mech and brake levers......:)

If you want to go down the respect rout take a look at this thread for an excellent result....

Re:

To be honest I struggle a bit with trying to find out information on these bikes! My understanding is that the 753 version was available as frame only but the 653 was not. I would imagine that if anyone had a 753 frame and the sticker fell off or disintegrated they would replace it with a 753 sticker rather than a 653. I belive they also had 531 models in the same colour scheme but if you are confident that the frame is 653 it could be very likely that it was full of Athena gear that has been slowly replaced over the years. I am at a loss as to why it does not show 653 Athena on the top tube though.

All i can really add is that mine is 653 and I love it. runs really really well. i need to get my headset replaced though so that might smoothen things out for me.

haha....sell me the front mech for now. please!

it may get me publicly flogged but I've bought a set of cheap n cheerful tektro retro aero levers, for comfort.

That thread is the reason I'm restoring my bike...its awesome the work that Maca has done on that project; he's also been very helpful to me with advice and tips on where to source replacement decals for my bike.

kettlo - I've emailed you a pic of the bike - would you be able to post it up please?

Photobucket is causing me grief on my phone!

Jules - I agree, its been a royal pain trying to track down info on the bike!
