Help ! Is my frame a Carlton ??

Ads

Retro Newbie
Good evening,
I have recently bought a frame which I was told was a 1979 Carlton, I've since bought it he and I can't work out the frame number and I'm now wondering what I have actually bought.

Many thanks

Well, the full wrap over seat stay arrangement looks like a Raleigh/Carlton/BSA/Sun clone but I think Falcon also used the same/similar design. Interestingly has Campagnolo front dropouts and un-named pressed rear ones.

Re:

I was also Worried about the weld across the bottom bracket, wondered if that was covering up the frame
Number ? As the one on there dosent seem to
Match anything ?
Also the detail on the fork cups seems smaller than on others I've seen. ?

Could well be Carlton, the colour (if original) rings a bell. Fork crown looks a bit different though...

Re:

I think that the frame is a 1970's Falcon 531 by Ernie Clements, I have one in the shed, the rear dropouts, bottom bracket (with seam), lugs and wrapover seatstays are the same. However, the forks are not the same and I suspect these have come from another bike.

Re:

Hi, I agree it looks like a Falcon, or don't forget there was also some nice Coventry Eagles from the same stable at this time ( early - mid seventies ?). Terry

Re:

Thanks for all your replys, I'm new to all this so learning the hard way,
I have been doing some more digging and it does steer (excuse the pun) towards a falcon,
I've found a picture of the same frame but different colour with the same forks as well. (Proberly mine before it was painted ha ha)
Does anybody have any information on falcon frame numbers ? I'll add a picture o somthing I found on the net.
Again thanks for your replies

Adam

Interesting! No mention of Brigg at all in the manufacturing locations - but does mention all the Raleigh group locations.

Are you sure it's a Falcon document?

I was going to say it was a falcon too.... something like this

We used to sell Falcon's back in the 70's and their numbering system seemed to be a random set of numbers without letters...........

Shaun

PS That's a Raleigh document

That is, indeed, the Raleigh document for dating frames
