Hi guys,
I have a lovely Trek Single Track which I am renovating.

It looks identical to the one 34Henry3w did a fantastic thread on in 2010 on this forum.

His was a 1994 930 model.

Mine is 1994 or later as it has the alloy chainguard plate held on with two allen bolts to rear right hand chainstay which from reading manuals on here says that this was introduced in 1994.

My pal who sold me the bike says he purchased it second hand in mid 90's and remembers that the owner said it was a couple years old and he had had it repainted. This explains why I cannot for the life of me find a one on bikebedia or vintagetrek website in blue (bit darker than retrobike logo) with cream decals. I think the decals are newer ones from a later 90's singletrack as it also says 'XC' in yellow between 'single' and 'track'.

My pal also remembers that he thinks it was a '970' model. (the model type decal on seat tube is missing).

Looking at spec list this would all add up with code numbers on mechs and cranks listed as around 1995.

Only other clue is that on left hand side of seat tube the frame has a welded on pipe where the rear brake cable passes through? This is not present on the one in the thread mentioned above and may be indication that this is the higher 970 model????

Are there any bike detectives out there who can shed a definitive light on this mystery!

To summarise....
Bike almost identical to thread mentioned above

Pal says it cant be any older than 1994 and had been repainted when he got it in later 1990's and says the number 970 rings a bell

It has anti chainsuck plate on it which was introduced in 1994 according to Trek brochure.

Cant seem to get hit with frame numbers

Rear brake cable pipe welded on headtube at left of seattube

Thanks guys
Andy

Really a picture(s) will give more normally

but anything you need is http://vintage-trek.com/ and with the new collection of catalogues you can just thumb through them and probably use your serial number as well. While you've done that, did you try the serial number ?

Havent posted pic because decals are misleading as point to later 90's and it is identical in every wat to the thread noted above already on here barring the tube on the frame which i refer to.
Iv looked at serial numbers but cant get a definitive. Ill post them on here and see what you guys make of it.
If all else fails Ill put pics on.
Cheers

Solved!

Located serial numbers on bottom of BB
They were:

1364221
950 19.5 B1 8(?)495

Looked on vintage trek and dedeuced following:

1/ the 136 number is random and personal to bike
2/ 950 is obviously model type
3/ 19.5 is size
4/ B means it was made in February 95
5/ other numbers not too concerned as above confirms what I was after.

Pics of 950 model on google images confirm that they had the rear brake router I was on about.

Cheers

Ah just read the noodle 'pipe' in your first thread, new for 1995 iirc. There should also be some initials on the Bottom bracket this'll mean nothing but its who made your frame. The ACSD is that in a figure of 8 chain link look.

Anyway nice present for the new year identifying it. Not the lightest of frames at over 5lb for that model but the main tubing should still be triple butted OX2 tubing I think.
Anyway anything you wanted to know about it originally is in the tech docs you've probably already read from that site :-)

Plans for it?

Didint know what you meant re 'ACSD'?

Yeah, not the lightest frame but has '95 XTR hubs, XT f/mech and shifters, LX f/mech and STX-RC chainset. Also has Dia Compe 987 cantis so nice light kit.
Just picked up a set of 95 Judy's for it so getting a full strip down and rebuild when I get round to it.

Good stuff, they where designed for 408mm length forks so the Judy will be a bit longer if at 60mm, much comfier. So they are M910 hub silver in the modern chunky design, nice :-)

ACSD, Anti ChainSuck Device as they called it. The plate on the stays.

Haha... ACSD.... you had me confused!

Yes re the hubs with mavic rims. Looking forward to getting it back on the tracks when complete. Lookin to have it similar to the 930 built by 34Henry3w in 2010 on this forum!

Cheers
