I am missng two of the black plugs that screw into the hole for the gear cable on Shimano shifter - as below.

What can I use as a replacement?

These things are available for £ 1.20 - yes that's right, over a quid for a poxy little plasticcy bit :o but the places that sell them want £ 2.50+ for postage - what!?!?!

yes - defo it is worth it, they are expensive XTR shifters that I would like them to last.

You know how sod's law works, have the holes covered and not a splash of water or mud goes near the shifters, the first ride you go on with them holoes uncovered, within 3 1/2 mins they will be full of mud and small insects.

I may try to make my own from carbon fibre....

.

So let me get this right, you've got 'expensive' XTR shifters but you won't spend a fiver to keep them working how they should?
Stop being so tight and spend the money

has anyone got a picture of these installed, as I dont ever recall seeing them and am now paranoid about my XTR sti's

Pop to Wilko,
by some black gaffer tape
cut a small square and stick it over the hole.
You'll never notice it and no problems loosing the screw cover next time.
Just use more tape.

Cost you about the same in purchase and petrol/bus fare (probably more in bus fare ;)) than the two thing posted.
BUT you#ll have gaffer tape in black, idea to take wrapped around a pump to repair sidewalls when they split.
Hold parts together and tie that sheep down...
