The little display windows that come with xt m739 shifters. [Sorry m-740 i think]

I got a set on here and the windows come separately and you would fit them yourself.
But how?
Its not just a matter of screwing one to the other ive tried that.I can see a little metal tab in a recess on the reverse of the window part but i cant see how that fits. The shifter has a brass bit that i can see is meant to push the little tab around but to do that it would need to stick out proud and it doesnt it is recessed also
Hope that made some sort of sense

[likely to be googling this after posting but its a good thread to have up for the future reference of others having similar problems]

I'll post up some pics of the 2 meeting faces so you can see how theyre recessed in.

 Oh very droll
I think they'll just be screwed on and doing nothing.Looks better with them attached.
I'll keep them that way till i find out

To be honest it's so long since I had STIs I can hardly remember. From what I can recall, though, the windows had the little brass bit that you describe and there was a hole / recess that they fitted in to on top of the thumb shifter bit... weird if it isn't there. Maybe post some pics up so we can 'av a look? :)

Sounds like you are missing the little white plastic bit that fits into the recessed metal bolt head that rotates as you cycle through the shifter.

It's below the main OGD part in the diagram within the group of parts labelled as '4'.

Thats the bits i should have but dont, well done Paul :D
I think its going to be very difficult if not impossible to find those pieces themselves :?

Anyone? :)

 At least i have the shifters and thats the main thing.

i think i've seen your thread where you've [hopefully] got the bit you need - just to say, when fitting it together, to make sure the white nipple on that plastic thingy has to slot into the metal thingy inside the OGD - you have to get it on at an angle then slide the OGD housing over to align the screw holes and keep it held against the shifter body else it'll dislodge and wont guide the indicator through the gears.
i hope this makes sense - you'll probably figure it out anyways :)

good luck! i bloody love those shifters! just missed a nos boxed set on here too!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I have those shifters as well, and even I fitted the OGD displays correctly they don't have any accuracy at all. Higher gears display fine but when lowering it gets crazy and doesn't display the correct gear even not reaching number 1, the red bar gets stuck between gear 3 and 4 (although all the gears shift sans problem).
So dont get mad if you dont get that little plastic tab cause even if you manage to get one the shifters wont display as they are supposed to.
I also had the ST-M739 shifters that came with the brake levers and those where a different story: the connection was made with a dented plastic crown, and the red gear indicator was always on spot.
I think those were redesigned OGD cause i tried to swap them but the hole where the connection is made is not in the same place so they are not swappable.
There you go, also IMO these 8 speed shifters are one if not the best ever made, crisp changing, light weight and can compare with todays XTR.

plus 1 for the 8 speed XTs! i had my first pair off a bike i picked up for £10 about 7 years ago :) have seen a few more sets since then but nothing compares IMO. trying to keep a good stock of spares too, but they go for a fair whack on ebay these days! :S

* i actually love the OGD, mine don't seem to be as problematic is okusare's though. i don't have the OGDs on any modern shifters because i just don't like the way they look :P
