Help! GT RTS

Retro Newbie
My father obtained this GT RTS frame from a work colleague who was clearing out his garage. Have had a quick google and found that GT released 3 versions of the RTS (plus the team version) but am clueless as to how to ascertain which one mine is. The parts still on it (shifters and front derailleur) are Deore LX and XT respectively, which as far as I can work out from Bikepedia/GT Catalogues point to it being either an RTS-1 or RTS-2.

From what I can tell though, the RTS-1 was XT throughout, and the RTS-2 was LX so unsure whether this points to front derailleur being upgraded (seems a bizarre thing to upgrade) or shifters being downgraded? (possibly a budget replacement after a breakage?) Essentially I am clueless, and the only thing I have been able to work out from the serial number is the year, 1994 (I think.)

Finally, I come very much from a road bike background, so MTBs, especially retro ones are a very much alien thing to me! This thing looks like immense good fun, and I know it was a great bike in it's day but I am absolutely clueless in terms of how it would be built up. Can someone please give me a quick crash course on mid 90s mtb components/sizes/sources and some sort of pointers on what my best options are for building this thing up on some sort of budget, given that the amount of use it's going to get will be purely recreational - I doubt I have the ability to test this frame! Also any potential pitfalls things to look out for?

does it have a black cro-moly rear triangle, or alloy?

serial number might help ascertain model also.

if its an RTS 1 it would have been made in the USA and the cap to the end of the top tube will be flat, whereas the taiwanese made ones had a rounded cap.

build? if its a cro mo one, its first generation RTS 1 period correct is rock shox Mag 21 SL's and M900 XTR...that can get hard to source and expensive though.

later models ran the judy line of forks, generally SL or DH. personally...i think they look great with yellow judy sl forks, syncros stem and shallow riser bars, yellow magura raceline HS33's and M900 XTR or 737 XT depending on budget..

yup a zaskar rts (flat cap)

will build to a nice bike

welcome to, what obsession? .com

I'd say rts-1 too, due to the flat capped top tube and the piggy back noleen rear shock.

I've got a team version and love it, though period correct it isn't, as its wearing last years xtr, crossmax wheels and fox forks. Rides and performs beautifully.

Welcome to retrobike.

Oh, in the pics I can tell you that the shifters and brake levers were a much later edition to the bike, as in 94, cantis ruled the day.

What the pivot bushings like?

Try to see if there is any "shonkiness" in the rear end.. Any form of lateral movement will only get worse.

Not impossible to sort out... if it is bad. Whereabouts are you?

My RTS1 is earlier (with the chromo rear end..) :D
