I have a 1970s cottered crankset in chromed steel. It's from a 1978 Peugeot and is a Stronglight replica.

There is a little play at the point where the right hand arm is pressed onto the outer chainring - can this be eliminated? Could it perhaps be stripped of it's chrome, spot welded and then re-chromed perhaps?

Suggestions would be most helpful, thanks for reading, Alex 8)

Alex, the chainset would be on a fairly low end model. Best to find a replacement, if it must be as original, pehaps get another similar peugeot in poor condition.
It might be possible to do some very local welds which do not affect the visible chrome.
These are chromed before being pressed, it might be difficult to plate between the crank and chainring.

true, I think it was just a U model as opposed to a PY or PX... moot point really as the frame is damaged and I'm just trying to salvage what I can from it :( thanks for your reply :)

Alex, Not much help, you already have a Peugeot in poor condition, don't need another. In my 13 years at the sharp end of bike retailing (1950's - 1960's) I only saw 2 cheap "joggled" chainsets that came loose.

keen memories! it's the first 'set I've seen do this, it may have occurred in the same incident as the damage to the f&f (looks like a head-on collision) or it could just be a lad in flares dropping it onto the ground as kids do.

incidentally, the two Pugs you mention (?) are one and the same bike - aside from the crankset and the F&F and wheels it's fine  not to mention saddle, cables, tyres  I still have the nice Weinmann brakeset, a decent French threaded BB, Simplex mechs & shifters, 24.0 post with correct shim, French headset, Lyotard pedals plus 25.0 bars & 22.0 stem though - thinking find another tatty mid-late '70s frame (or as you say complete bike) and go with cotterless cranks - after a re-spray. I also have some alloy 700c wheels here (mid '80s) and a set of alloy 27" wheels ready to roll.

Then again I may just stick with my Sun Worksop and forget my Pug dreams :?

Two things you might be able to do. Grind it back and weld it, if it's all steel. Weld it on the inside where you can't see it, apply a bit of grease and forget about it. Alternatively, you might be able to peen the edge over so it grabs it again. You'll need a sturdy surface, a hammer and a centre punch. Use the punch to deform the lip back down, where the lip has come away from the chain ring. Obviously, check it's square afterwards.

cheers for the tips, will get one a go soon. no worries about it being square as it's cottered (unless you mean square as in the spider still being at 90 degrees to the arm), :D

I just gave the hammer trick a go and it's worked, no doubt my exceptionally powerful legs will drive it loose soon   but it's fixed for now!

nice one 8)
