Right my question is say someone posts a thread in the for sale section, and someone contacts the seller via pm about the item. Then someone posts about it on thread but it has already been sold to the person via pm. Is this fair????

On another forum i am will (not a bike forum) on there classifieds section you have to post in the thread first and strike a deal on thread so everyone can see and then go to pms after.

I think that the seller, as the owner, can do business however they like.

Whenever there are more buyers than sellers for certian items people will be disappointed. I have seen posts (on other sites) where something is advertised and for a period of 3 days buyers can PM their best offer to the seller. Different system, not necessarily any better though.

There are base rules here: http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17697

If you are unclear then I would suggest you PM John who runs this place. It's reasonably lax here but my understanding is first come first serve but I always PM plus post in the thread that I have PM'd too.

If I am selling I keep all the PM's and if there is any complaints etc then I am happy to post up a screen grab of my PM Inbox showing who got here first and at what time.....really it's all about being up front and honest :)

Well, the rules say dibs are unenforcable.
And that's fair enough. Personally, I give priority to my mates/people I know IRL, then people I've never dealt with on the forum but who post regularly, then people that have just arrived and only posted in the classifieds. Works for me.

 Oh is that how you do it chris, mates firsst

oh well, ill remember that when my next retro sale comes along

I go with whoever posts dibs first
This is why
Seeing a bit, i want/need/not need but want anyway,i post a reply, sometimes however, by the time ive written it somebody else has got in first before ive submitted it its down to seconds really  .

If i was a sneaky git, i could pm the seller and because of our message pop up ,he usually sees that first, thus artificially bumping me up to the top or at least bringing it immediately to the sellers attention circumnavigating the whole dibs thing

As above i think this is a time saving tactic and a bit sneaky, so i dont do it when buying and only go with first posters when selling

 Im feeling quite moral now

The first person to arrive panting breathlessly at my doorstep wins.

Oh, sorry... we're discussing classifieds - er, first come first served in most cases.

Whoever comes up with the readies be it via pm or a reply

If both offering to buy, take it in time order just to be fair
