helmet cam justice

Neil - excellent post there; good points, balanced comment and put across very fluently too.

I think its more down to the people in question, not the mode of transport - someone who drives like an idiot, probably rides a bike like an idiot etc...

haveing had a result with my phone cam, i think its a good idea

Spotted this story yesterday, got quite riled by the ill-informed muppets in the comments section though; yet again it seems not all of Joe Public knows the difference between Road Fund Licence/Road Tax (abolished nearly 75 years ago!!) and Vehicle Excise Duty. The latter does NOT give a motor vehicle automatic right of precedence on public roads! Getting pretty sick of the cloth-brained "you don't pay road tax" contingent....

They do my head in too, because I DO PAY ROAD TAX. £205 just the other day. Not only that but I pay the same for my bike as all other zero emissions vehicles, £0

the case i referd to in my first post was very simmiler to the clip shown. the difrence being the van driver was parked in a bike path and i passed close by, puches were thrown and i tried to wrap my bike round his head, in the end he was in the wrong and lost the case.
we will never see and end to idiot behavior on both sides so its best to cover your own arse the best you can. the police would never have been able to do anything if i hadent taken a picture and had a seperate witness. for them they need evidence, without it they are powerless to do anything and wearing a cam will help with that if your driveing or riding.

As a cylcist, pedestrian, motorbiker and driver I see a range of bad/dangerous driving.

That Van driver though was scary. If that happened to me I would have deffinatly reported him to the police like the cyclist did.

The trouble is with a van, is vision, a blind side is just that blind, yeah, that's what side mirrors are for, but having had a van, as a cyclist out on the road, I am particularly wary of vans, as mirrors are not all encompassing

What happened to the chap in the video, happened to myself with a double decker bus, I got squeezed off the road, the driver totally oblivious to his action, as he was avoiding cars on his side who were doing similar to him on the approach to a round about.

The reason cyclists are not accounted for I believe is not because we don't pay road tax, but because we aren't seen, we don't create that mind warning keep clear of the unprotected fragile thing on two skinny wheels as to be fair, how many motorists actually want to hit a cyclist with their vehicle, how many want to go through the insurance hassle and possible police action.

Now something I have noted out on the road drivers respond to lighting, not so much shapes, but lights and lights that flash or suddenly come on, with motor vehicles that means direction indicators and brake lights, we don't have them, perhaps we should for out on the road, as how many times as say as ourselves as a car driver, we have grumbled at another car driver who could not be bothered to indicate when they turned or cut across in front.

Cycle direction indicators and brake lighting is available and seeing as road courtesy is becoming a thing of the past on Britain's increasingly angry roads, perhaps it is down to us. Hell, even some of the invalid buggies have indicators and brake lights, so why are we exempt, there is no law, so we don't do, do we have to wait for a law to protect ourselves, or do we do like we did with LED lighting when that became available for cycle lights. If anyone remembers, they were illegal at first, but they were necessary to be seen at night, we broke law and eventually the law followed the cyclist and created a DOT ideal.

That's what people often forget - any old zero-emissions vehicle is exempt, as are petrol-/diesel-engined ones of a certain age (I forget how old a car has to be to be recognised as a tax-exempt "classic" for VED purposes).

I'm not a car owner but still pay towards the upkeep of the roads I use; not always 100% sure that Hants County Council are giving me good value out of my Council Tax on that front, though!

Before i start - the van Driver was a tw4t and reacted appallingly...

Anyone notice the start of the clip - he cycles up the inside of the bus - there is no bike lane - this is a move a lot of people do but it is undertaking even when the bus is at a standstill. It is illegal and very dangerous for both people that might alight form the bus and for the cyclist if the driver doesn't notice him.

The cyclist could have avoided the collision by braking slightly when the van over took at the first point or even once round the corner - I know he shouldn't have to but it was the easier option from the viewpoint his camera gave.
