Hello

Thought I would say a quick hello. So, hello all.

I found my way here because I have taken the plunge, well I'll rephrased that I have decided that I will take the plunge and rebuild at least one of my old bikes to its former glory. Namely my Zaskar, a 1997 model I think. I bought the frame and built it up in early '98, cost a bleeding fortune back in the day; Sid SL's, full XTR except for S-works cranks, Mavic DH rims (cant remember what they were called DH21's sound right?), cant remember the type of head/Ahead or what ever it was back then, or the bars or stem. I loved it. So I am going to sort it out and start using it as my new Canyon Spectral 6.0 is not great for road riding.

I also have a 1994 Stumpjumper that is in fine working order, just too small for me, and my first ever mountain bike a 1990(ish) Hardrock which needs some love but I still have the original wheels, saddle and 200gs groupset.

My first question, which has been asked a thousand times already: Where does one get decals? All the repo ones I have seen are different to mine, mine looks like this http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=109967

I'll try to be helpful but I do not profess to know a great deal about old skool bikes, I used to be a teenager and knew everything but that was a long time ago. However, if you are looking to build a football pitch or running track or something then I might be of use!

Re:

Thanks both. I am guessing this is the same Gil that has/had thecycleshed.co.uk website?? I did email him there yesterday but had no response but looking at the facebook page it says he is away until the 25th. I am so excited a little bit wee came out......

I'll try and get some pictures up, the Zaskar is looking very sorry for itself truth be told. Unloved, it has been in the garden, albeit covered (mostly) for the last 6 months. It will be fixed.

Thanks. Gil can be quite generally quite busy. If he's off at the mo, it might seem like forever til the 25th – particularly if you're excited already. But he does respond and he does produce very nice quality retro decals, as many will testify. Looking forward to seeing the Zaskar come back to life...

Hello to you. Looking forward to the pics.
You do know this could be a slippery slope you are on now.
Jeff.

I think "could" is the wrong word......one foot is already over the edge and slipping down. If I bottle it now it'll be the painful splits that or a nice spanky Zaskar.......then a Stumpjumper......and maybe even a Hardrock...not much of choice me thinks. That is why I have said it out loud, now I am committed.

I'll get some pics over the weekend.

They look to be good and I have only read good things, hoping I'll be able to get some new ones for the forks too.

The more think about it the more I am remembering about all the things I have forgotten about, bearings for instance........I feel there maybe a "few" questions being asked!!

Welcome! If you have a ball burnished frame then with some elbow grease you can have it back to it's glory days. There are several posts on the site regarding compounds, techniques and insights so have a look. I undertook the same project last year with mine. Enjoy!

That is sweet! Mine is the same, I feel inspired. I have one of those spin wheels, only the front, I had completely forgotten about it, it is on the stumpjumper along with the pace forks (RC30's??) which I had forgotten about too!
