Hello, just joined - Refurbing my Saracen from around 1992

Gareth

Retro Newbie
Hello all - just joined having done some searches in relation to my Saracen Special Edition which I had when I was around 16 back in around 1992 - it was around £500 at the time and i've never had a bike since which feels as right as this.

Just getting round to refurbing it (starting with new tyres) but any info on this bike (or similar from that time) would be of great interest.

I've had about 15 years off from cycling and although I worked at Halfords at 16 I'm sure all the specs have changed - just wandering if most of today's parts will fit this bike.

Cheers

Gareth

Welcome to the site!

Your Saracesn's looking pretty good, bit of a polish will have it gleaming in no time.

As for what bits will fit it what bits need replacing?

Oh, don't look in the for sale section, you'll not leave with your wallet intact!

Hi.
Brakes are V's now so will only work with V's not with your canti. Standard headset is 1 1/8 not 1 which yours looks.
Nice vintage ride. Look after 'her' 8)

Oh and A-head tends to be standard as well

Hi pal, welcome to the gang, bike looks quite nice stood there in black, if everything is working leave it alone and ride it, just lube the parts up that need it and enjoy.

Saracen lost their way but are decent again and gaining some reputation. Their bikes from 1989-1997 were superb though. Yours included. If it were mine i'd just do as above, take parts off and grease and clean them properly, lube everything up and get on out on it. You'll soon see if you want to replace anything, such as going to v brakes etc.

Welcome to retrobike......I agree, don't change anything, just spruce up the old girl and rediscover your youth.......

I like that Saracen year, and in a few ways that year is better than the following year, the frame being one of them, they were'nt as nice the next year on in my oppinion.

As to what to do with your ride, just replace what is knackered, bearings if they are, and cables, leave the rest alone, it is good as it is.

But no doubt you might want to change bits as time goes by, it is only natural, most of us do that, myself included with my current '93 Saracen, but what I change has to do with my old '92 Saracen, which was more versatile.

Yeah, aheadset assemblies are lighter I suppose, but I much prefer the quill system yours has, as you have height adjust, aheadset sucks if you need more height. Also you have the front cable hanger stop high up, the best place, unlike later cycles, where it is too low down.

Edited to add, after another look at your pics, I notice you have an unusual collection of components on your bike, some old, the handlebar having the old style logo on them, that stem, I have never seen one like that before, and it complements the Saracen pierced top tube, could you tell me if that stem has Saracen stamped into the end of it ?

Other things, as another mentioned what looks like a one inch headset, ( mine was one and an eight XT) and the front brake cable routing seem a bit better thought out than what mine had. The other thing I thought odd, was the Altus brake/shifers on your bike, they I think came later in '92, as the ',92 bikes I knew of had XT, DX, LX and the stuff beneath that, my '93 Saracen had Altus when I got it. It seems to me your bike is a mixture of old and new parts, pre 92 and post or at least late 92, perhaps why it is a special edition.

Mind I think Saracen had a habit of doing that with their bikes, the ocaisional parts bin raid, very much like the auto industry, in fact I believe it was common for bikes of the same model and year to have some differences in components.

As to brakes, V or canti, well, if what you have you are happy with leave it at that.

Nice bike, look after it.

Parts Bin

Hi thanks for the replies

Interesting to hear about the mixture of parts - yes the stem has the saracen logo imprinted. This explains why at the time all the Saracens I looked at in Halfords and those my mates had were all similar, but never quite felt the same as this one.

I agree with using the bike rather than restoring full - its in full working order and ready to ride so thats what I intend to do!

Only thing i'm disappointed about is that I cant seem to find Ritchey Megabite tyres or Ergo ring handlebar grips any more??? Or a replacement for the original saddle for that matter.....

Cheers

Then I believe you a rare stem with that logo impressed on the back, for I have never seen one of those, and I was, and am now a Saracen lover. In '92, the bikes generally had Zoom stems and Kalloy bars.
