Hi all,

newbie here. have been a keen cyclist, both MTB and road, for years with a passion for retro cars which has now spilled over to retro bikes.

there was a lot of stuff on bikes when i was growing up int he 80's that i lusted after but as a kid i couldn't afford, like cannondales, deore XT (& DX), columbus and reynolds 531, campag anything and colnago road bikes.

so now that i am older and can afford it i treated myself to a colngao master olympic. i'm not sure what year it is but it has lugs for the shifters on the down tube and internal cable routing on the top tube.

now i need to start looking for a fork and decide whether i'm going to go full original or put some more modern components on.

anyway, lad to have found this forum and looking forward to learning more from all you guys.

Welcome. To complete your lovely frame you really need to find some chrome Prescia forks - fortunately they come up on ebay quite often.
You have a pretty free run on choice of parts - either a period parts from the 90s or a more modern groupset - as long as it's shiny alloy that is

I'm not an expert on Colnago but certainly from a cosmetic point of view the curved forks looked a lot more balanced and sexier.............later forks seemed to be dead straight and come from the bottom of the head tube at an angle.......like they had been bent LOL

Welcome.

Looks like a great start to a build. Never had a Colnago (yet), but always wanted a 'Master'.

You should start a build thread on it. Lots of interest in folks bikes and how they get on with builds.

I think Colnago changed the frame geometry when they started using straight forks so for the best handling you should fit whatever the frame was designed for.

now the question is how do i find out what year it is so i can tell have forks i need?

i have read somewhere that colnago changed over from downtube to bar mounted shifters in 1993 so this one must be earlier. i have also read that the olympic was only produced in olympic years so that would make it 1992, 1988, 1984 or 1980.

i would guess 1992 is the most likely of those year? but is there anyway of finding out for sure?

Hhmmmm it was my assumption the frames kept the same geometry as in '92 (ish) there was a choice between the traditional curved and new straight forks, ie you could decide at the point of purchase what fork you wanted. I'm sure the rake was the same for both forks - 38/40mm from memory. That's not gospel but in the hours of surfing the 'tinternet I have read that on more than one occassion.
