Thanks all...don't have the disc, pre-installed. Guess I am going to have to go to a shop and have it looked at..... :x

All they will do is a fresh install, save yourself the cash and do it yourself. Do you have files you need to recover from it? You can use that SLAX link i sent before to run the computer in a Linux environment from a CD, copy all your old files to pen drive etc and you'll have access to the net. Once done, then format and install a fresh copy of windows.

If you go to the Samsung website you'll be able to download and burn the install disc too.

Your problem does sound very similar to a virus I had a while back.

Just realised its a netbook so no CD drive. You can install SLAX onto a pendrive too, you may need to enter the BIOS to enable boot from other device.

which windows version was it XP, vista or 7?
didn't you get any CDs with your netbook? there should be a cd with which you can do a fresh installation of the operating system via an external cd drive.

Thanks mate...I'll have a try but it really is a different language to me

Indigo....nope...no disc supplied. I do have an external drive though.

Took it to the shop. A lot of teeth sucking.

Looks like hard drive or RAM....I can't touch it without invalidating the warrenty

Yeh but Samsung will say it was a virus which invalidates it anyway :?

If its starting it's unlikely it's a memory problem.
A safe mode boot loop will be corrupt system files.
Unlikely to be a hard disk issue as you stated before the smile/search engine thing, it'll be adware/malware that's shafted the Windows installation.

If you get the option to start SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT choose this, that'll get you to a DOS prompt and not load half of the (probably screwed) windows stuff.

Then follow this, under More Information to get System Restore running.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449

Try rolling it back a fair bit before you think it got infected, you won't lose any personal data in doing so.

Agreed, if it was RAM then you won't post at all. If it was HDD then you wouldn't get the windows boot options.

Shame you don't live closer to me, I would have sorted it for you, but trying to direct someone over the internet is quite difficult.

They shouldn't need to open it at all though :?

Thanks chapsd...really appreciate the trouble in replying to this thread. I am of course a computer numpty.
I Have tried command prompt but it does the loop again.
I can get the advanced options menu which gives me

Safe Mode ....tried...loops
Safe Mode with Networking...havn't tried
Safe Mode with Command Prompt....tried...loops

Enable Boot Logging......double dutch
Enable VGA Mode....as above
Last known good config....tried...loops
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only) sounds scary..havn't tried
Debugging mode...tried...loops
Disable automatic restart on system failure....scary

Start Windows normally.....yeh, like I havn't tried a million times
Reboot.....boot you out of the window you piece of junk...work godammit!
...actually, don't think I have tried that
Return to OS Choice menu...yeh, yeh

You now need a default restore, losing your data or an installtion repair, saving your data - both from external media.
or
An engineer to boot with diag tools and manually repair Windows, saving your data.
or
An engineer to put the hard drive into a caddy and repair using a 2nd PC, recovering any data you may have too.

Or download SLAX boot to Linux, transfer your files to pen drive, or network if you have another PC on you router that's networked, format and install windows.

I would have a go at the USB boot option, just to see if you netbook will boot. SLAX is just an alternative lightweight operating system, it will boot on any PC, Laptop, Netbook gives you internet access and lots of other applications from a CD or pendrive. Won't harm trying :D

That virus has deleted or added something to your startup files, normally you still have access to safe mode, but this one is little bugger. The logging option just creates a log file so you can see any errors. VGA mode is boot with basic graphics.

Being a new netbook I wouldn't be surprised if the bios understood a bootable flash stick was inserted at boot and bypassed the HD operating system ; my MSI wind does and is very similar to an NC10 .

if your sticking with windows try Avast antivirus , it's free and updates regularly , never had a problem with it and it doesn't force itself on you like a lot of antivirus will .
