Evening all ,

Last week took delivery of a FREE  british 653 frame and fork . It came with Ultegra headset parts (1") , but only the parts that fit in the frame and on the fork crown .
Spent Saturday trying to tidy up the paintwork , before I put it together . Having done so , I tried to put in a cartridge Ultegra h/set I had in the spares box , only to find the stack height was too , er , high , so I ran out of thread to put the lock nut on . Needing something shallower , I ended up using a Ritchey cup and cone job just to get me out of trouble , but I'd like to have something nicer on it if the bike turns out to be the right size for me .
It's touch and go whether it's too big .
I guess I should have measured the headtube and the steerer before posting this , but I wasn't near the computer 'til this evening

Thanks in advance for any help ,

I have a frame (Kondor/Kotter) that makes me miss 2-3mm with my 6208 headset. I get on Counter nut without the nosering, just enough, but not enough to feel good.
I will route down the headtube with a headsetrouter 1mm each, top and base, on friday. If not inuff, there is still the fork to give a mm. Why should I start fiddling with headsets...
I have a Tange so that would make it, but... i want 6207/8 on that bike.

ah... never do the paint work before a testassembly was successful ;) u will destroy your work partly nearly for sure.
I (after at least one experience) build up the bike, ride it a while, and then do the paintjob and re-assemble.

When I say tidy up , I mean clean off the rust . Getting it ready for a retro ride on the 16th. If I like it and it fits then I will get it done properly.

Thanks Richard , seem to remember contributing to that thread
Gonna take the forks out and measure the length of the steerer tube and the headtube so I can see what headset options there are . Can get a direct replacement 6400 ultegra one but looking for a new one ideally

I got a new HS from Malcolm at THE Cycle Clinic (a site sponsor) - bm0p700f

Bit of a latecomer here on the suggestions front, but the chromed steel Shimano 105/STX* threaded headsets with cartridge bearings have a really low stack:

*No difference between the two other than the labelling as far as I can tell.
