I've seen a lot of talk about 1 1/8 and 1 1/4 headsets.

Is the supply of 1 1/4 a bit scarce now? I remember lots of bikes having them.

Most bikes/headsets for sale on ebay tend to be 1 1/8" now,the 1 1/4" is a lot more scarce, some manufacturers still make them though, ive been after parts for mine for ages, they dont arise that easily

Chris King also makes a headset called the "Devolution" which fits an 1 1/4" head tube but allows the use of 1 1/8" forks and stems. No shims or reducers required and the thing isn't any more expensive than a normal King. Plus lets face it, it will be the last headset you'll ever need to press into your vintage ride.

I've got one on my Cannondale Beast and its a dream.

headset

The 1 1/4" headset size was only around for a few years in the early 1990's, with most everyone changing over to 1 1/8" headsets by about 1995. The Chris King headsets are very well made, although I wore one out in 3 years on my current bike. The good news is that I sent it to Chris King and they rebuilt it on warranty for free!
