Headset removal

I spend too much time on boards like this,

I already cleaned up stored the tools, plus I promised to take it easy on the banging noises after midnight.

Take it to your LBS and look the other way when the banging starts

BTW I recently installed some headset cups using the 'put them in the freezer first' method, it worked great, they don't exactly fall in place but with a little persuasion went in easily.

Get a mate to hold the frame firm,DO NOT CLAMP IT.long firm stick of wood and hit it out,short sharp knocks as what has been said,alternate where you hit it around the inner cup to avoid digging it into the frame.

But if youre still concerned seeing as its an ally frame then take it to your LBS

i use an old handlebar with an end-plug in it as the "stick"

Might sound like a cowboy but I've done loads even on pre 88' corroded in stuff using nothing more than a blunt flat-bladed screwdriver and a weighty hammer... Short, sharp taps and none of this clamping lark Everyone has come out with no damage to tube or set.

You guys are geniuses! I've spent 2-3 weeks searching for an LBS around Peterborough that will touch my early 90's 'Dale with the intention of removing the headset cups - they all cower away when they realise it's 14yr old aluminium.

I just read this thread and went out to the garage armed with an 'ammer and an old handlebar... my headset cups were out within 10 minutes and I didn't even have to whack it hard enough to scare myself!!!

Next step is getting the new cups in... is it really as simple as freezing the them and then drifting them into a nice warm headtube with a block of wood and the aforementioned 'ammer?

Well, thanks all mine is done too. I held it just aft of the head tube and tapped it out with the plastic hammer and park tool. The feedback I got from actually holding the frame gave me the confidence to tap it hard enough. In the past I also used screwdrivers as "tool" for this job, but that was in the days of 10 quid headsets.

So out went the black Syncros and in went the King in anodised blue, there's some more bits like that for some retro flair to a modern build. FWIW I use a PVC drain pipe from the local DIY shop some 35dia x 3?mm to tap in frozen headset cups.
