Headset options

Well I'm not going to build it up using cheap tat... but I am keeping my eyes open for a hardtail frame in the meantime...
Needs to be a pre-95 bargain though.. not only am I cheapskate, I'm also skint

And what's so nasty about an LTS frame??
My '93 Cinder Cone wasn't exactly built with high-end parts but it was still a decent bike.

Everything's swappable anyway..

Cups are out . . no damage by the look of it..

nice one, i recommend putting a smear of grease inside the headtube where cups sit
well as you said build it with decent parts and swap out frame when it comes to it

This will be going together slowly (after doing time for the sacriligeous act of Chris King abuse  - if that's the way I go with it. . ).. and I'll be putting the requisite fluids in the correct places..

I had intended to build around my Avalanche frame but I've now finished kidding myself that it'll fit so it's going into 'storage'

'storage'

'retrobike storage' - somewhere that contains no viable space for another bike frame yet, man fits all manner of things in supposed 'full' storage

She'll kill me eventually. . . when every cupboard she opens spills out random mtb parts

Although, she did like the wheels that arrived this morning - might let her have them for the voodoo, appease the beast

I wouldn't , bad engineering principal . If anything use a loctite , but that's only if there is a slight difference in the headtube diameter and cup , ie if the cup pushes in by hand loctite will stop any possible movement .

Chris kings are over rated .

Now there's some words of interest. . . I'm just rolling with Chris King for the turning bit and Thomson for the stem and post. . .

Need to know more and also of some worthy alternatives please me ol' china 8)

Ignore me I just have headset envy!

Steel LTSs were heavier than alloy thats all, and the LTS was overrated IMHO (I rode an FSR BITD when these were around).

I would use the old steerer rather than a screwdriver to knock the old headset out - more "edge" will be in contact which the headset so less chance of damage.

I'm sure it will build up into a cool bike though! Are you gonna fill the dent?

 @ line #1

Yeah, I'll be filling the dent - as much as is possible.. knocked the cups out with a steerer tube thingy I cut off a pair of RST Omni's (who said they were useless  )

Planning to get parts together over time, made too many daft purchases and really have to wind my neck in..

It's a real shame that to get the pretty colours you have to pay a premium. . . still on about headsets.

I hope it'll be cool.. quite liked the feel of it before I dismantled it.. because of the dent, though, I may rattle can it rather than powder coat - unless I can get a good deal on powder coating.
