Hi guys ,

Wondered if you'd be kind enough to offer a little advice on 1" aheadsets.

What was generally available in 1994 and of good quality and durability ? what was pants and what was good :)

94 was very early for ahead, so DiaCompe, who hold the patent, are the logical choice. An contemporary alternative was a Shimano with M-Part ahead converter.

Thanks for the reply m8, I did think the 'Ahead' system had arrived after 94 tbh, haven't researched that one :( :)

I asked the original question in reference to one of my new incoming 2017 project's

it's going to need something nice, as it's a Breezer :)

My immediate thought was .. Ritchey. ?

But to be honest I have Ritchey Headsets on other bikes, and fancied a change :)

Dia Comp , tbh I've not used, are they good quality and durable ?

I love the Mavic one I've got on a Funk, but as far as I'm aware they only did the threaded type ?

Thoughts ?

Ahead systems were on MTB's in 1992 for the 1993 season. GT were very early with Tioga Alchemy, but this was for 1 1/8.

1 inch was a bit of an oddity as everything was going oversized as quick as marketing could get it out.

Univega were one inch ahead. My Cannondale is 1 inch ahead too. I have a Dia-Tech 1 inch aheadset spare but there wasnt much about at the time.

Yep your right I remember more 1 1/8th Ahead systems than 1" bitd :) , had actually thought the Ahead system was just available back then for 1 1/8th for some reason.

I'd forgot my Univega was 1" and ahead  I'll have to take a look what I put on that can't remember now :)

Thanks for the input and feedback. :)

My 93 rts-2 had a Tioga 1 1/8 aheadset, no idea if a 1 inch version was available. I recall you could get converter caps for shimano threaded headsets so perhaps an option? You could remove the threads on a threaded headset and use a 1 inch co.oression sleeve thing from a more modern headset in theory.
