Old School Hero
I'm after a late 80s headset for a period build, and was hoping you'd be able to offer some advice. The groupset for the bike is going to be mixed so branding is not an issue, but I'd like the best I can get. The original Stronglight A9 was recommended to me, but the needle ones that I've been told to look for seem to be hard to come by. Likewise Mavic headsets that I've been told about.

I've found this headset, it's apparently got needle bearings... but is it suitable, and is it any good?

Any other advice absolutely welcome.

And a link to the headset I'm asking about...

STRONGLIGHT JDX "Jetport" Headset (JDX-BSA)
From France, Stronglight's newest JDX Road headset represents some of the most advanced engineering yet available for headsets. Reversed thrust needle roller bearing technology allow greater resistance to heavy weights, providing longer life. The "X" mounting technology avoids any looseness of bearings since the full contact needle bearings are fitted vertically opposite one another, like an "X". Weight: 112 grams. Stack height: 38 mm.

Other features include:

"O-ring" seals to protect the bearing system from external elements;
Patented system doing away with all locking screws, thanks to a Zytel self- locking monobloc nut for ease and precision of installation (special C-spanner tool provided);
Aerodynamic design, beautifully finished in anodized silver.
