I think long and hard about what the part is worth, both in the context of the part itself, including condition, and also in the context of the bike it's going onto. Then I bid what i think it's worth based on that. If it goes past, there'll be another one along sooner or later. I have 4 bikes I can ride, I'm not in a desperate hurry to put the other 3 into the shed as well!

A few years back I bought NOS Delta brakes from Butlers for £75. They now regularly go for multiple hundreds. I could make a fortune, but I really like them. Sadly, I can't afford any more sets...

You see parts you can buy new from pretty much any bike shop going for more than the new price. What kind of idiot pays more on eBay for 2nd hand than you can buy brand new for? Work out what it's worth, bid that, accept some eejit may bid more than it's really worth.
