Have I got the right chip to fix this HP Pavillion s3000 Intel Core2 Duo slimline machine?

The notches look in the right place.

Not going to count the pins though....

it may all be in vain as I'm missing the fan and heatsink by the looks of it.

all depends on what your motherboard can handle, can you check hp's website for supported cpu's or google the motherboard model

Unless you're 100% sure that the motherboard is fine then that is a bit of a risk even if it's the right processor.

Used to do a lot of pc fixing/ building but I've lost touch over the last 5 years or so and got left behind on the spec side. Had too many DOA motherboards in the past from car boots, etc so I'm wary now unless they're as good as free.

And yes you will also need a heatsink and fan.

I presume the CPU was removed when you got the machine? Otherwise I'd be surprised if it was the CPU that had failed... IME motherboards fail regularly (generally bad caps) but CPUs almost never, unless they're cooked to death and even then that's very rare given the built in thermal protection?

Agree totally, one of my current pc's is on its 2nd motheboard and original CPU. This one has likely had its CPU "pulled" for another pc if that's how you received it.
I'd be gutted to spend £30+ on a CPU aswell as a few quid on heatsink and fan and then not get that magic "beep".

Yes, it's a genuine Intel part that came boxed with a CPU, for which I used an aftermarket heatsink and fan.

Given the size, it's almost certainly a proprietry motherboard, so I'd check the processor compatibility carefully. I found this: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...kId=101&prodSeriesId=3376322&prodTypeId=12454, which suggests a slower CPU with slower FSB as a base processor than the one you picked out, but makes no mention of whether it can handle a faster CPU with a higher FSB.

The case is quite small, so while the heatsink and fan I have will definately fit the motherboard holes, I'm not certain it will fit in the case. However, I'm happy to send it to you if you want it, and you could try it for size before you buy a processor. I don't need it, so it's no loss if it won't fit.
