Hardtail with silly wheels...Stanton Switchback

Re:

2.2 MK's are okay on a wideish rim. I run 2.2. on the rear and 2.4 on the front. Prefer them to rubber queens (now called trail kings) as they have more widely spaced knobs so clear mud better (and are a significant amount lighter).

Re:

The Race Face rims aren't hugely wide (21mm internal). I'll give them a whirl though...they were cheap enoughy from Merlin to take a punt. There are no 2.4's available though.

I think they look skinny due to the bigger wheel size too. I've always been in the camp that 650b is no different to 26, but having been fiddled briefly, they are noticeably bigger.

Ooh there it is, looks great in red, So the super short back end of 415mm is still there with bigger wheels, they've put a curve in the seat tube by look of it, should be a snappy handler, I like a short playful chainstay, how are they on the faster downhills though? The swapouts are a neat addition, so a SS build or different axle is possible.
Also regarding sizing, top tube on Stanton 18's is still longer than my medium Cotic though I;m not sure what the bendy seat tube does to this. I bet its going to be fast with light big wheels and tyres. Bookmarked.

Cheers buddy.

Hopefully it'll still ride really well. If I'm honest, I doubt that I'll really notice the extra wheel size...I think it'll just feel like a hardtail that fits me.

My Slackline felt like great fun on the downs and egged you on to go a bit faster and that had short stays.

The overall top tube and reach seems pretty long and comparible to the Rune, which will be ace because I like the fit / feel of that.

Just had a text from the boss to say that my 34's and other bits from Merlin arrived today. All I need now is the brake hose for the rear brake, my new saddle (Ti Fly) and the tubeless kit for the wheels.

I may have to have a little tinker this evening and kit the headset etc.

First ride this weekend looks on!

Ooooh thats exciting. I've had 3 short bikes now, The Omen is still not built, But the DMR Rhythm and the Last Rufus had silly-short rear ends (like 400 or less) and were good fun, more capable than you'd expect for a toy bike. The relaxed head and big wheels will make it long and stable too.

Bit of an update...

Unpacking my various parcels.

So, I set to work.

I'm still waiting for a few bits (saddle, brake line, rear axle, steerer cutting guide and tubeless conversion kit) but did what I can.

Having sat on it briefly, it's certainly longer than the Slackline...a lot longer and very, very slack too. I'd summed that the forks were 180mm post mount because the brake mounts look big. They're not so I've had to order a new front mount. The rear rotor looks tiny, so that may get increased to a 180mm and possibly a larger front rotor if it's gong to encourage sillier riding than the Skackline.

Overall, I'm really happy with it so far and can't wait to get out on it.

Re:

Looking good, can't believe thats an 18" as it looks smaller (seat tube wise) - must be the bigger wheels!
