Hanger alignment tool needed ....

... as all my LBS's either haven't got one or are snowed under. Possibility that this got bent during my last stack-up. Gears playing up and have virtually checked everything else.

Any idea where I can buy one from? Nowt on eBay that I can find. :(

Cheers, ya lordship, but I may have use of one for nada! 8) I'll check out the link anyway.

Finally found a bike shop that will do it for me in a 5 minutes session for just more than the cost of buying a tool, FFS! - do I look like a tourist? :?

  jeez,,, I would suggest you buy the tool in that case,, they are really handy to have in the workshop,,, ;)

not wanting to sound like a complete luddite here but.....

big ass adjustable spanner normally does the trick, at least it has for me for the last decade, no skippy gears in my stable!

Cheers but I've got a sensitive set-up that's pi55ing me off, as even looking at it in a funny way sends the indexing out! .

no skippy gears in my stable!
... I wish!!

I'd need to make a full-on '4-point to rim' adjustment with a proper alignment tool to save my swearing at it on a regular basis. 8)

how come it's so sensitive? I've had even 9sp systems knocked way out of kilter on ride before and even managed to straighten enough to get it shifting properly again using hand pressure and the mech as leverage.

doesn't do the mech any good mind but are you sure there isn't something more sinister at play as even bent hangers can work ok...

from experience it has more negative effect if the hanger is out of alignment transversally rather than vertically.

ie: if you stand behind the bike looking forward and the hanger/mech appears twisted to the left or right it messes indexing up more than if it were bent over at an angle top/bottom wise.

Pop a crappy allen key in the mech and use a bar to bend it straight ; wont damage the threads in the hanger or the mech . It's what I do to most shitty bikes I have to spend my time with . Sometimes if I feel like it I'll get the proper tool out and use that but it's nothing more than a bolt with a handle at the end that can spin freely at the end of a long bar , I'm sure you could make one if you really wanted to .

Lets see , you would need the correct size thread bolt about 2 inch long , a length of tube that slides over it about 1 inch ( perhaps a rear axle spacer ) a larger tube a fraction shorter than the first that slides over it snug with a bar welded to it so you can check its straight against the rim , which you do at the same point on the wheel to rule out any bends in the wheel .

I often don't bother charging to do it either , it's often a matter of course thing to do when setting up gears .

It's sensitive because that's more polite than calling it a f**king bitch!

Mixture of different old stuff, LX shifters, R100 mech, mixed cassette with various sprockets (although I've put in an original 12-21 now and shoved in a 105 mech) and not really helped by a relatively unhelpful cable run and not too strong a hanger.

When set up properly, it does work but is prone to messing me about. Strangely enough, works OK with an 11-28! :?

Might be that the hanger is fine, but I'm gonna start with that and take it from there.
