Half dead bird! Swallow ptarmigan (re model...page 7 on)

Been doing a bit of work on the ptarmigan after deciding to swap out the mavic m261 cd for some araya concave rims. The ptarmigan has become a firm favourite and is now very much a keeper....its actually grown into a unicorn almost, as my appreciation of its subtle nuances has grown with the miles. Not sure why im suprised...its not like Peter and Robert don't know their stuff!

Anyhooo. ....Although a touch heavier (250 g between the two), i came to the conclusuon the mavic grey finish just wasn't sitting right with the modified black stem. So i took the opportunity to rebuild using some rebuilt xt m732 / m730 hubs, some lightly used spokes and new nipples.

Glad i did, as its restored the balance of the design and the wider, darker rims look more period correct and give it a degree of gravitas.

I love this. If it was smaller I'd have my dibs in by now ;)

Gosh will you look at those shiny spokes and nipples against the stygian grey of the rims. Lovely.

Just re-read the thread… lovely stuff..

BTW how are you pronouncing ptarmigan?

A while back i changed the very shiny chrome tioga stem to a black one i sprayed up......well guess what......ive changed my mind again.

The black was too black and just made the front too heavy, so after much looking i finally found a polished ( not chrome) ritchy force.

The other thing i didn't like was the cable through the stem...i dont know why, ive just never liked the look of that solution.....so with the help of a knackerd marin quill (previous owner had removed with mole grips) i built myself a roller......

I think im now happy!

So here's a couple of photos.....last ones just for.....well you know who its for!
