Just a heads up.
Had a text this morning from a chap interested in stuff on Gumtree with an email address
Use email address to contact and you go through Gumtree 'security' requesting card details to verify account ya de ta de ya
Obvious scam but looks genuine

I answered an ad a week ago to buy a camera in Fort Bill, when I got there with the cash there was a message from Gumtree warning not to deal with the advertiser. I think it was one of those scams where people advertise a high value item at a remote location and take 'deposits' online, for goods that don't exist.

Luckily I was collecting some kayaks anyway, so I didn't go out of my way.

I'm in the process of moving so I've been popping a few things on Gumtree of late, normally with two or three things on there at any one time. On Saturday I think I may have experienced the same thing, but didn't get as far as any exchange of any information.

I received a text from 'Edward' with no contact number or any message details, I thought it was a bit strange as this person wasn't a contact in my phone book and there was no way to reply to the sender, simply an email address in the message body, the message read 'Hi, I tried to call without answer please email me about the gumtree ad.. [email protected]'

I sent an email later in the day from my home account enquiring as to which ad he was refering to, but never received a reply.

Re:

I assumed that ALL gumtree ads were scams or adverts for trade crap! I went through a stage of looking to buy items on gumtree but 98% were scams, especially cars and bikes. It still looks the same, When you see a 5 year old e class merc for £3500 alarm bells tend to ring!!! I called and low and behold, that car had sold but could 'organize' a viewing on a similar car! :?

Re:

autotraders just as bad! ring up for a van and 20 mins later get a text from a non returnable number telling you email them for more info, then when you do reply you get answers from yet another email addy, and then another and then ayet another....I found the same t5 van in 5 different locations in the uk with the same ad so far. its a shame as its nice van and the price is right but they dont hang around long enough to take my cash

Autotrader is awful , get a SIM card from tesco use it only to advertise on autotrader and watch that phone light up with all sorts of nuisance calls ...bet they make more selling your number than they do your car!!!
