GT Zaskar LE - Hidden Gem, or Bag of Stones?

Hi All,

I've been reading up about GT Zaskars and noticed one for sale locally so went to look at it today. It was not as good a spec as I'd expected, as I was under the impression they came with better spec all round as standard, but wondered if anyone could take a look and tell me is it really an original spec Zaskar or do you think someone along the years has stripped it and replaced it with low spec components? As you may have gathered, I bought it anyway

It does have the flat GT plate on the back, but no serial number that I can see (unless I'm not looking in the right place). It's the burnished steel sort of paintwork but needs a good clean and polish as it has mud and grass everywhere.

Not sure if any of the components are originals, but it basically has Tektro caliper brakes (rear calipers and levers are metallic blue), SIS twist shift type gears, 21 speed. Not much more I can say about it, but if any Zaskar experts can cast their eyes over the pics and tell me whether it's a hidden gem, or a dog that needs putting out of it's misery, then I'd be very grateful.

It doesn't have suspension forks, but blue GT rigid ones. The other thing that's throwing me is the fact it has a threaded headset, I was thinking it should be an aheadset, but as I have no idea of the year, it could be much older than I thought it was (guessing it's from the 1990's).

The frame itself is straight with no dents, just a fair amount of cable rub, chainslap etc, but I think it might come up quite nice after a good clean and polish. Do you think it might be worth stripping down for rebuilding?

Peel off stickers by using hair dryer to heat them up then wd 40 to remove any residue.

As for being a zaskar it does have end top tube cap.

What are the numbers stamped inside the dropouts and does one side say 6061?

Hi

The dropout area looks to have been polished to death, but I can make out what appears to be either a 6 or an 8 on there. Will assess again when it's had a good clean, as it is covered in dried mud at the moment.

that mech hanger looks dodgy, and being u-brake, it could be a pantera, but components can be changed so its either had a hard life or is maybe a pantera, poss broken rear mech hanger thats been replaced.

That it's such low spec and someone's put some made up not-proper-GT-Zaskar stickers on it leaves me feeling pessimistic. Don't give up hope though!

Hi

The 1st pic shows some kind of like rear mech adaptor thing on it, so I've took that off and this is the actual hanger, that is part of the frame:

I don't know if you can also see the numbers printed into the dropout? There are definitely numbers there, on one side I can see a 6 (the right hand side) and on the left, the numbers 1, 4 and 1. Just did a bit of brass rubbing to try & make out the rest, but can't quite see them, it's like they've been buffed off.

I think I'm defo going to strip it down, clean it up and take it from there. Thanks for your help everyone.

You never know, only original bit on mine was the headset !
Had crap wheels, raleigh seatpost, specialized seat, saracen stem...
Reel pile until I polished it and saw what was underneath.

Could well be a 92 Pantera. They had a flat end cap and a non-replaceable mech hanger as seen on that one.

The Zaskar LE first appeared in 1992 and alongside the standard Zaskar it also had a non-replaceable hanger. The 1992 Pantera had a similar non-replaceable hanger and flat end cap, but was made from 7000 series alloy rather than 6061. It was also painted red.

The replaceable hanger first appeared in 1993 on the Zaskar and the Zaskar LE. The 1993 Pantera and the Avalanche AL also had replaceable hangers but had the curved end cap.

So the non-replaceable hanger hanger dates it as 1992 or earlier.
Hopefully the frame markings should be able to distinguish whether it's a Zaskar, Zaskar LE or Pantera.
